For many years, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) prohibited ETF managers from directly holding ether or other cryptocurrencies, but these funds could hold a portfolio of futures contracts tied to the expected prices of ETH. Futures are contracts to buy or sell an asset at a preset price on a given date.
