Mission

The Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, Inc. (BTI) was founded by William Boyce Thompson out of a conviction that "any principles concerning the nature of life that you can establish for plants will help you understand man, in health and disease." He also saw plant science as a means of ending hunger, thus ultimately promoting democracy and political stability. BTI scientists increase the understanding of plants to benefit people and the environment, concentrating on plant development, molecular plant microbe interactions, and molecular and chemical ecology. BTI envisions a world where nutritious food is abundant, the environment is secure, and people live fuller, healthier lives.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Research

With world population predicted to reach nine billion people by 2050, understanding the principles underlying agriculture is increasingly crucial. BTI’s research aims to speed the development of sustainable agriculture and healthier food production through research into basic biological questions. Guiding questions lead our faculty researchers to insights into what mechanisms plants use to grow, to defend themselves from disease and insects, to use water, and to react to stress.

BTI’s research has the potential not only to help increase the food supply, but also to enhance the nutritional value of foods in developing worlds, to reduce the need for fertilizers and pesticides, and to produce cheaper vaccines.

Economically disadvantaged people

The Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) believes it’s crucial to have an informed and engaged public. Thus, outreach and education is a primary institute directive, with efforts to make plant science accessible for all audiences and to inspire and support new plant scientists.

BTI hosts professional development programs linking high school science teachers and students with BTI researchers in collaborative research projects. The institute also fosters research and educational experiences for undergraduate and graduate students and community members, along with summer internships for area high school students.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

President

Dr. David B. Stern

The underlying research theme in the Stern laboratory is nuclear-cytoplasmic interactions. Within this framework, we study how chloroplast genes and metabolic activities are regulated by the products of nuclear genes, usually acting at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level. Chloroplasts, as the site of photosynthesis as well as other metabolic pathways, have numerous roles in plant development, and responses to environmental stimuplant transformation, and biochemistry to unravel these processes.
