Great question. For the past two years I've taught a reading seminar at the Crime Fiction Academy in NYC, and here are a few of the noir/crime/mystery novels I've assigned (all are still in print/available):

THE KILLER INSIDE ME by Jim Thompson

THE CRY OF THE OWL by Patricia Highsmith (but also check out RIPLEY'S GAME, which I just finished. Amazing.)

MIAMI BLUES, by Charles Willeford

THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, by James M. Cain

SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER, by David Goodis

THE EXPENDABLE MAN, by Dorothy Hughes

COTTON COMES TO HARLEM, by Chester Himes

THE LAST GOOD KISS, by James Crumley

THE HUNTER, by Richard Stark

... to name just a few.

Cheers--

Even if a new idea seizes your attention. Finish it. Nothing happened for me as a novelist until I actually finished the first draft of my first novel. And yes, a lot of it sucked, but that's what the revision process is for. You can't revise what you haven't finished.(less)

“I read like fiends smoke crack”
Duane Swierczynski

“The world will run you down and slam a tire over your exploding skull and not even wonder what it had just hit.”
Duane Swierczynski, Fun & Games

“The Other Him gave a creepy look that bordered on pity. Oh, you poor baby. Which was surreel. Was that what Hradie looked like when he was trying to look sympathetic? No wonder everybody seemed to want to punch him in the face.”
Duane Swierczynski, Point & Shoot

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

“It doesn't matter. I have books, new books, and I can bear anything as long as there are books.”
Jo Walton, Among Others

“Facts are simple and facts are straight.
Facts are lazy and facts are late.
Facts all come with points of view.
Facts don't do what I want them to.
Facts just twist the truth around.
Facts are living turned inside out.”
David Byrne
