Writing fiction is a fun excuse for Melanie to explore ghost towns and old houses, travel to unusual places, and spend hours reading dusty books and journals. She writes both contemporary and historical fiction with threads of romance and suspense.

Melanie is the award-winning author of almost thirty time-slip, historical romance, suspense, and contemporary novels including Catching the Wind, The Winter Rose, and The Wings of Poppy Pendleton. Five of her novels including Chateau of Secrets have won Carol Awards, Catching the Wind won the Audie 2018 Inspirational Fiction award, and Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana won Best Novel of Indiana. Catching the Wind and Memories of Glass were both finalists for Christy Awards in historical fiction

I'm so glad you enjoyed this story! Thanks for letting me know. I'm sorry you were disappointed though with the Catholic themes in the book. This was a historical novel based on the life of a woman named Genevieve Menke. She was a devout Catholic woman who grew up in France and I tried to be as faithful as possible to her and her beliefs. If you're interested, you can find more of her story here: http://melaniedobson.blogspot.com/201... . I'm grateful as well that we have the incredible opportunity of being able to go directly to God with our prayers and our thanksgiving today! It is a tremendous blessing.

Thanks again, ~Melanie(less)

Thanks for your question. I've been part of two books about the Oregon Trail. One was my novel "Where the Trail Ends" and the other was a collection of stories (Oregon Trail Romance Collection). Right now, there aren't any plans for a sequel to either of those, but I'd love to write again about the Oregon Trail one day!(less)

River of Lights

Years ago, I was preparing to travel to France to research Chateau of Secrets for my adult readers. After a fun day playing on the Oregon coast, my daughters and their friend said, “Why don’t you write a novel for kids set in France?”

On our car ride home, we dreamed about two girls, long-lost sisters, who explored a magical fairy world underneath Paris. We thought about all sorts of fun ideas, and Read more of this blog post »

Hi Beth, Thanks for your note. The Winter Rose was released in January this year, and my next time-slip novel will be coming out in 2023. The title and specific pub date are still to be determined, but it should be published by next fall.

“I have no desire to be in a relationship for the sake of being in one,” he said. “I’ve made mistakes in the past, terrible ones. The next time I date a woman, I hope it’s for keeps.”
Melanie Dobson, Chateau of Secrets

“That's what she wanted more than anything. To be free of her anger. Wounds.”
Melanie Dobson, Catching the Wind

“Autumn Dancer flutters among the flowers, chasing the last rays of sunlight until her haven is swallowed up by the night. Her sisters are asleep now, hidden under the fronds, but she doesn't care. She dances alone in the twilight, embracing the warmth of the golden hour, her wings sweeping past silky petals of the late summer blooms. In the safe cocoon of her garden, she dares believe that no harm will ever enter the gates. This is her world of beauty and peace, of sweet nectar and life, completely unspoiled by the footsteps of danger or the silent mockery of time.”
Melanie Dobson, Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor

“Cheap grace means grace sold on the market like cheapjacks' wares. The sacraments, the forgiveness of sin, and the consolations of religion are thrown away at cut prices. Grace is represented as the Church's inexhaustible treasury, from which she showers blessings with generous hands, without asking questions or fixing limits. Grace without price; grace without cost! The essence of grace, we suppose, is that the account has been paid in advance; and, because it has been paid, everything can be had for nothing. Since the cost was infinite, the possibilities of using and spending it are infinite. What would grace be if it were not cheap?...

Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.

Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the sake of it a man will go and sell all that he has. It is the pearl of great price to buy which the merchant will sell all his goods. It is the kingly rule of Christ, for whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble; it is the call of Jesus Christ at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him.

Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the gift which must be asked for, the door at which a man must knock.

Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It is costly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because it cost God the life of his Son: "ye were bought at a price," and what has cost God much cannot be cheap for us. Above all, it is grace because God did not reckon his Son too dear a price to pay for our life, but delivered him up for us. Costly grace is the Incarnation of God.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship
