You really need to shut your brain off to enjoy The First Descendant
A man with a gun fights a robot in The First Descendant.

One month ago, I was sitting in a meeting room at Summer Game Fest about to go hands-on with The First Descendant. I was eager to see how Nexon's multiplayer looter shooter would shake up a space dominated by Warframe and Destiny 2. Before I could start, I was shown a long video presentation breaking down how the game works in exhaustive detail. I was instantly lost; it felt like I was reading gibberish. That confusion didn't clear up when I was tossed into a hub with no direction and had to be shepherded into a dungeon by a nearby PR person like a lost sheep.

I came away from that experience appreciating its sharp shooting and character-driven gameplay, but felt like I'd need to see the game in context to really get it. I wanted to know more about the world and its characters. I wanted to build a Descendant from the ground up instead of getting thrown into a hub. It felt like I was doing it a disservice by judging it based on a high-level activity that I couldn't possibly hope to understand.

A speedrunner playing a game at Awesome Games Done Quick.

$50 million. That's an unimaginable amount of money, but in the 14 years that Games Done Quick (GDQ) has been holding speedrunning marathons, that's how much money it's raised for charity. It's sure to be outdated by the time you're reading this article, too -- at the time of publishing, Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) 2024 in Minneapolis is entering its final push for donations, which will certainly add to the $50 million milestone.

Despite such a monumental total sum, GDQ says its median donation is just $25. It's millions of people, from eager fans to devoted volunteers and tight-knit staff, that make the biannual marathon stream happen. It certainly doesn't happen on its own. Twice a year, GDQ holds an event that runs for seven days, 24 hours per day, which is not only shown to a live audience in the thousands but also streamed live on Twitch for millions more.

Deadeye, a person in an orange exosuit, fights dinosaurs in Exoprimal on a street.

With the latest update, Exoprimal, Capcom's dinosaur-fighting action game that isn't Dino Crisis, will no longer release seasonal content, Capcom announced Friday. This news comes just one year after launch.

However, Exoprimal isn't done just yet. Not only will the game remain online for now, but older seasons will be put up for sale for the rest of the year. Season 1 will come back after Season 4 ends on July 11, Season 2 will go up in August, and so on until December. Players can also continue to check out weekly campaigns and missions, including double EXP events multiple times a week and Savage Gauntlets. Finally, all game modes will be available, including the story. And if you're having issues finishing the campaign alone, the developers promise some AI bots will come and help. You can check out the full schedule here.
