Descript 3.6 is here and ready for download, and we’ve got some exciting new features to show off.

We now support recording computer system audio direct into Descript, which makes recording remote interviews a breeze. We’ve enabled batch actions on search results, which you can use to easily scrap “you know” or “like” filler words. We finally added drive-level folder support, making all your project management dreams come true. And thanks to our new publishing integrations, you can easily host your podcast on Buzzsprout or create an advanced audiogram with Headliner.

Watch this video for an overview of all these new features. For the nitty-gritty, read on below.

Remote recording

It’s easy enough to host interviews and conversations online, but actually recording them has usually involved either third-party utilities or audio routing trickery.

We’re happy to announce that those days are over. You can now record your computer system audio directly in Descript, which means you can record remote interviews easily. All you need to do is add a second track in the Record panel and select “Computer audio” for input. The below video will walk you through these steps.

For now, this feature is limited to Mac only.

Folders

At long last: Folder support at the drive level within the Project Browser! You asked and we listened. Whether you’re an individual user or working collaboratively on a team, being able to organize your work within folders will surely come in handy.

They work pretty much exactly like you’d expect them to, but it’s worth pointing out that you can pin folders to your sidebar with the pin icon, and the ellipsis drop-down menu allows you to rename, move, or delete them.

Batch search actions for filler word removal and more

Descript has long had filler word detection baked into the app: more on that feature here. But not every filler word is the same, and sometimes filler words, like, grow up and become filler phrases, you know?

Ahem. In case Descript’s built-in filler word detection isn’t solving your filler word problems, our new batch search actions feature will come in handy.

Pull up the Search feature and select Current Composition to limit your search to the Composition you’re working in, or search the entire Project. Enter the word or phrase you’d like to remove, like “you know,” and at the bottom of the sidebar you’ll notice Suggested Actions, including Remove media. Select that option and then you can choose Delete, which deletes text in the script and the corresponding audio in the Timeline, or Ignore, which skips over the corresponding audio in the Timeline but leaves it in the script, with strike-out applied, in case you’d like to come back to it later.

Publishing integrations

Descript now provides publishing integration functionality with podcast hosts and service providers. If you’re looking to take your podcast to the next level, our launch partners can help you do just that. Find them by clicking the Share button and selecting the Publish tab.

Buzzsprout is a podcast hosting platform that takes care of everything you’ll need to get your podcast online, including hosting your podcast on their servers, distributing it to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts, providing listener analytics, and more. There’s a free plan to get started, and full-featured plans start at $12/month.

If you’re looking to promote your podcast on social media, an audiogram — a video featuring a snippet from your podcast — is a great way to do that. Descript can create basic audiograms for you, but if you’re interested in making a splash, Headliner is your solution. Headliner allows you to create highly customizable audiograms, adding video backgrounds, text overlays, animated GIFs, and more.

We’ll be rolling out additional publishing integrations later this year. Interested in seeing a different host featured? Send them our way.

As always, we’ve included additional performance improvements and bug fixes under the hood, but these are the new features you’ll want to know about and take advantage of. For a full list of updates, keep an eye on our product changelog.

How Descript Helped Produce The Sharpest Political Ad of the Season

Descript’s magic lies in its simplicity: It transcribes audio and video and allows you to edit the underlying media by editing the transcript. Harnessing that simplicity in creative ways enables editing workflows in Descript that would be overwhelmingly laborious and time-intensive in other traditional media editors. In a nutshell, that’s the story of how political coalition Republican Voters Against Trump (RVAT) used Descript to edit down hours of footage of Senator Lindsey Graham’s own words into a razor-sharp ad that went viral on Twitter and made waves in American news media.
