Jumpstart a Career in Conservation or Outdoor Recreation

Embark on a rewarding journey by jumpstarting your career or starting a new career path in outdoor recreation or environmental interpretation. Explore the intersection of nature and learning as you inspire others to connect with and understand the importance of our environment. Whether leading guided tours, developing educational programs, or fostering a love for nature, this path offers fulfilling opportunities to make a positive impact on both individuals and the planet. Virginia State Parks' staff will impart knowledge and provides mentorship helpful to starting a career post-service. You will also learn day-to-day park operations and how a park interacts with the community in which it is situated. Alumni of the program may continue to have careers in Virginia State Parks, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and in federal agencies.

How to Serve

VSCC Interpretive Guide members serve as park interpreters at state parks across Virginia during the summer season. Members receive training in interpretive techniques, learn about stewardship ethics, and help park guests connect to natural and cultural resources.

Members present information and programs to park guests and interact with the community. They work with park volunteer coordinators to increase volunteerism and may help with trail work. Members follow all rules of the park in which they serve, maintain a positive attitude, and strive to provide quality service to their community.
