Sweet Home K-Drama: Is It Based on a Manhwa or a Webtoon?

Sweet Home is a highly popular apocalyptic fantasy-horror K-drama starring Song Kang. It made its debut on December 18, 2020, with its first season on the global streaming platform Netflix. The series is an adaptation of the much-celebrated webtoon of the same name by Carnby Kim and Youngchan Hwang.

Although many manhwas are nowadays released as webtoons, not all webtoons are manhwas, which refer to graphic novels or comics of Korean origin. Whereas, the term webtoon refers to a particular format rather than its origin. Thus, Sweet Home is based on a webtoon and not a manhwa.

Sweet Home webtoon: How is it similar to the Netflix K-drama?

As mentioned above, the renowned authors Carnby Kim and Youngchan Hwang have written the Sweet Home webtoon. It chronicles the fascinating apocalyptic story of an isolated high school student named Hyun Cha. He is obligated to leave his house after losing his entire family in a sudden tragedy.

Soon, Hyun Cha’s life turns upside down and becomes extremely scary as a massive threat to humanity begins looming around the world. Horrifying monsters are trying to destroy humanity and take over the planet. Thus, Hyun Cha, along with some disinclined individuals, has to go on a challenging quest to save the world in a chaotic apocalyptic situation before everything is over.

Apart from Hyun Cha, some other pivotal characters in the Sweet Home webtoon include – Eun Lee and Jisu Yoon. Some other significant characters are Hyuk Lee, Dusik Hahn, Wook Pyeon, Myeong-Ja Lim, and Yuri Park, among others.

The Sweet Home K-drama, starring Song Kang, closely follows the original webtoon. It depicts the thrilling story of a troubled teenager, Cha Hyun Su, and his battle to survive, along with his neighbors, in a world where terrifying monsters are on a rampage. Their fight is also to hold on to their humanity and save the world. Thus, the webtoon is quite similar to the Netflix K-drama.

The series has released two seasons as of now on Netflix. The highly anticipated third season of the show will air very soon on the streaming platform globally. In the first season, viewers witness Cha Hyun Su relocating to a knocked-down apartment complex, Green Home after his family members die in a horrible tragedy. Soon, he and other survivors team up to survive after otherworldly monsters start ravaging the city. Hyun Su also ends up developing the symptoms of a monster. He can soon turn into one with wings whenever he wishes. Others also transform into monstrous creatures originating from their desires.

In season 2, the audience sees the Green Home survivors roam around in a chaotic world full of ruins. Meanwhile, different scientific institutions and government bodies keep on studying and experimenting with the monsters to discover a cure to save the planet.

In the upcoming season 3, viewers can expect to see Song Kang’s Cha Hyun Su decide to put an end to the entire mayhem. The season will also see a colossal showdown between monsters, humans, and a new species referred to as the Neohumans.
