With support of the Fulbright Scholar Program, Ignacio Grossmann is visiting the Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Santa Fe, Argentina, from March 12 to July 11, 2024.

The Fulbright Program, the United States government's flagship program of international educational and cultural exchange, offers students and scholars in more than 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to mutual understanding.

"I am very honored to be a Fulbright Scholar as it has allowed me to collaborate with researchers from other parts of the world, like in this case with researchers at the Universidad Nacional de Litoral in Santa Fe, Argentina, who are engaged in very interesting projects related to process and energy systems engineering," says Grossmann, the Rudolph R. and Florence Dean University Professor of chemical engineering. "I also enjoy the opportunity to teach courses to students from other countries. Overall, the Fulbright program is a very enriching experience."

Grossmann is teaching an eleven-week graduate level course, "Mathematical Optimization of Process Systems," for MS and Ph.D. students in chemical, industrial, and mathematical engineering in the Faculty of Chemical Engineering at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral. The course is also being followed through Zoom by several universities in Argentina (including in Cordoba and Tucuman), Chile, and Uruguay.

Grossmann will also collaborate with faculty at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral on several research problems, including CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers, optimal design of oil and gas pipelines for shale gas production in Vaca Muerta, and optimization models for logistics of air separation supply chains with a heterogeneous fleet of trucks. These projects are also part of the activities of the Center for Advanced Process Decision-making at Carnegie Mellon University. Additionally, he will give several seminars on educational and research topics.

This is Grossmann's second visit to the Universidad Nacional del Litoral through the Fulbright program. He was a Fulbright Scholar in 2017. Grossmann also previously served as a Fulbright Specialist at the Universidad de Cantabria in Spain in 2023.

Fulbright Scholars build skills and connections, gain valuable international insights, and return home to share their experiences with their students and colleagues. Fulbright Scholars are college and university faculty, administrators, and researchers, as well as artists and professionals. The program awards more than 1,700 fellowships each year, enabling 800 US scholars to go abroad and 900 visiting scholars to come to the United States.
