On July 2,  Ignacio Grossmann was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Universidad Nacional del Sur in Argentina. It is the ninth honorary doctorate he has received, joining this international list: Abo Akademi in Finland, University of Maribor in Slovenia, Technical University of Dortmund in Germany, University of Cantabria in Spain, Russian Kazan National Research Technological University in Russia, Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Argentina, Universidad de Alicante in Spain, and RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Reminder! The College of Engineering DEI team is now accepting nominations for its Student Advisory Committee (SAC). The SAC is a group of twelve students from across the college who meet on a biweekly basis to discuss matters related to DEI. The group also supports initiatives to support existing or new efforts to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment for everyone in the college. One undergraduate student, four Master's students, and two Ph.D. students are needed to join SAC for the 2024-2025 academic year. Happy to share our latest article published in Computers & Chemical Engineering! In this work we share our findings on optimization strategies for co-optimization of desalination unit design and network operation for produced water networks. Some of the main novelties and results are listed below: 1) A novel network formulation is developed for modeling network mass balances to avoid singularities at zero flows 2) The trust region filter framework is used as a decomposition algorithm for decomposing the integrated optimization problem efficiently 3) The trust region based decomposition provides better convergence compared to the full space formulation I would like to thank my co-authors Miguel Zamarripa , Markus Drouven, PhD and my advisor Lorenz Biegler for their valuable contributions and insights.
