RIP Sir Andrew Davis

We are saddened by the news that Sir Andrew Davis, the renowned British conductor, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024, surrounded by family after a battle with leukaemia. Sir Andrew recorded exclusively for Chandos Records from his first album Elgar’s Crown of India in 2009, making almost 50 recordings and gathering countless accolades and awards in the process. We will miss a wonderful musician who imparted so much to all who worked with him in such a generous, self-deprecating and humble way. RIP Andrew.

“…The two singers are sensitive and expressive. Soprano Kirsi Tiihonen, who has made a name for herself as a Wagner singer, has a warm and full voice that is well suited to lieder singing: she sings with commitment and drama, sometimes with intense restraint. Bass Timo Riihonen has a wide range, from dark, black bass to lyrical high notes. Pianist Terhi Dostal provides supportive accompaniment with incisive creative power. The sound recording is excellent in terms of balance and spaciousness.” ****

“… In five acts with 56 scenes, Bollon offers a rich panorama that not only demands changing tasks from the orchestra, but also requires the numerous singers to act quickly. Some of the parts are also extensive and require formed voices that are up to the task. Fortunately, it can be said that the ensemble of the Freiburg Opera, despite the large number of singers involved, performs this opera with great and successful commitment in a uniformly unified, high-quality cast. The three choirs also offer their parts with a gripping joint effort, balanced and beautiful in sound as well as rhythmically secure. As with the singers, the fact that the composer also conducts the orchestra also contributes to the instrumentalists’ precise and committed playing.” ****

“… The music is opulent and pleasing and is shown to its best advantage in this performance. The American tenor John Osborn impresses with a much differentiated portrayal of the title role. His Jean de Leyde shines not only with vocal splendor, but also with fine mezza voce singing … The American mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong has a powerful voice, a present depth and a radiant timbre in the upper ranges. Her portrayal of the prophet’s mother Fidès is full of character and intensity… Mané Galoyan is an excellent Berthe … The choir of the Opéra de Lyon impresses with its committed and voluminous singing … The opulent London Symphony Orchestra under Mark Elder also makes a significant contribution to the success of this performance…” *****

“… The WDR Rundfunkchor Köln and the Kölner Kammerorchester sing and play with their subtle, attentive work in a very lively and responsive manner, creating a highly flexible and unified impression. They are complemented, where necessary, by good soloists who complete the engaging character of the recording.” ****
