A bit of trepidation led up to our reservation at the City of Rocks. After spending nine delightful nights at Faywood Hot Springs a mere 2 ½ mile drive up the road to City of Rocks felt a bit unnecessary given the heat index here in July. But we’ve never been here before and it did appear to be another geological wonder. We made sure to get an electric site so we’d have A/C but it was still hellish in the afternoon. Regardless, the amazing scenery and the photographs are what we were after, and early mornings and late evenings provide nice temperatures and the best light anyway.
The scenery did not disappoint. The shower rooms were a bit far from the camping sites, but very clean. The visitor’s center building houses them as well as a small history museum and gift shop. The history behind these rocks is quite interesting.
We decided to cut our stay down to just one night and move along further north and hope for better temperatures. That is why our nightly rate was higher due to the penalty assessed for leaving a day early. Site E7 was fine, but a primitive campsite within the rocks would be preferred, weather permitting.

We stayed here at the end of a one month, 30 day, 2,600 mile trip to see the eclipse in Texas. What a great park! We were in site #1 which was not a large site, but it fit our small 5th wheel and truck. It was a little tricky to get level, but we did it. We stayed here at the end of a one month, 30 day, 2,600 mile trip to see the eclipse in Texas. What a great park! We were in site #1 which was not a large site, but it fit our small 5th wheel and truck. It was a little tricky to get level, but we did it. It was a dry camping site and had a nice picnic table, a barbecue grill and a trash can that was emptied while we were there. If you like to watch the comings a goings of the park, this is the site for you. If you crave privacy and quiet, you might want to pick another site. It was very quiet at night and the stars were amazing as well as the sunrise from our site.
The site and the entire park is clean, clean, clean and very well taken care of. The visitor center building is an architectural gem, and they have bathrooms and showers. The volunteers at the visitor center were very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.
We rode our bikes on all the trails and they were also very well maintained. The trails are not too long and were fun to ride. There is also a hiking trail through the middle of the rocks that was fun too. If you like to geocache, there are some caches to find. What I liked about the park is it is very well-signed and easy to navigate. The area was very green, the flowers were blooming and the weather was perfect when we were there in April.
One thing, though, is the dry camping sites vary widely on size and slope. Some of the sites would be very difficult to get an RV or trailer into and not many that will fit a larger RV. If you have a bigger rig, I suggest you definitely check google maps or call the park and make sure you will fit in the site you want. The electric sites looked very nice even though you wouldn't be amongst the rocks. They were wide and long and had a nice shade pavilion and a picnic table on a patio. I believe they save some FCFS sites in both the dry camping and hook up areas. I did not see a dump station anywhere.
We really enjoyed our stay here and out of hundreds of campgrounds we have stayed at, I would put this one in the top 5. It's very relaxing and quiet and we hope to be back.

Super helpful camp host. We arrived late but she flowed us into an overflow spot given the FCFS sites were all taken. 10/10 recommend and definitely coming back for a campsite among the rock formations.

No Dump Station, (Campendium notified)
The bathrooms/showers are clean. Electric sites are not amongst the big rocks. They are on the leeward side of the prevailing winds, so the rocks tend to protect the sites from storms.

The first come first serve spots 40-45 are not amenable to large vehicles IMO. Electric spots are like typical campground but with pavilion and cement pad. The non electric are amazing and many are very large. The dark sky is amazing and so quiet. I would camp here again and again and again.

This may well be my favorite State campground in NM. Great rock formations to explore and photograph. The campsites are all nestled into the rocks. There isn’t a ton of space between campsites, but it’s better than average for State campgrounds. There are hot showers.

Really cool park, campsites are nestled (sometimes shoehorned) into the rock formations. Pay attention to where other reviewers camped - site accessibility/suitabilty varies greatly. Whole park is rock formations on a hill, so many sites have at least some slope to get in. Some sites level, some not very. We had to back uphill up the access road about 100 yards to ours (#21), and we parked with the jack fully extended with 9 yellow blocks plus a 10x2 board underneath to get close to level. Once we got the stabilizer jacks down (resting on large rocks), with chocks on the downhill side of all 4 wheels, we felt secure. Luckily side to side leveling only required 1 layer of yellow blocks. The 3 sites (22-24) down the access road from us are better left for tents, Class B or small Class C rigs. They're on a little cul-de-sac with healthy slope for access (sites themselves pretty level).
Great walk-in sites for tent campers - you can snuggle in by the rocks!
Verizon Cell tower is SW of the intersection of Hwy 61 and US180, so line of sight campsites can coax out 3 bars sometimes. (ie hook-up area and hill beyond)

We camped at the City of Rocks campground in mid-April, the weather was great with temperatures in the 70's. Our site was a spacious back-in site that was surrounded by large rock formations, a very cozy and private spot to camp. This site had a picnic table covered by a large shade tree, fire ring, and nearby trash container. The vault toilet was a good distance away, the free warm shower facilities are at the visitors center. We hiked through the unique rock formations, an amazing experience and an easy hike. The night skies are wonderful, everything about this campground was very enjoyable and peaceful. We had 2 bars with Verizon.
