We got to spotlight Carl Wilson in our earlier blog Celebrating Excellence: A Heartfelt Thank You to Carl, Our Top Contributor!

Carl's invaluable insights and active participation have made a significant impact on our community.

What sets Carl Wilson apart is not just his technical understanding but also his willingness to engage with the community. As a continuation of the spotlight series I reached out to Carl to share his thoughts on community. He was very kind and generously offered advice for new members, insights into his motivations, and some of his favourite aspects of the community. Let's get to know Carl better :)

1. Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?

I am Carl Wilson a Principal Solution Architect. I am originally from New Zealand, grew up in Australia and now live in the UK. I started my career in Telecommunications where I first came across the Remedy platform that were using custom applications. Self-taught, I eventually decided to move from the Telco industry and into this space full time when I moved to the UK for the second time. I jumped in head first and this career has taken me around the world and to many different industries.

2. What advice would you give to new members joining the community?

To help other users, if an answer has helped you solve the issue then please mark the answer correct/helpful to aid other users. There is a plethora of information on the communities from the merging of older versions of the communities, therefore searching is the number one tool anyone should be using before asking a question as more than likely (unless a new technology) someone has asked the same or a similar question before.

3. Are there any specific topics or areas within the community that you're particularly passionate about?

I really like working with Remedy ITSM, TrueSight Orchestration and other applications that allow for automation.

4. How do you think the community could better engage with members who are less active?

This is hard one to answer as it depends on why members are less active. A large number of users have moved into a different space in recent years, some don’t have the time they may have had in the past to interact due to work loads, slowing down, etc.

I like the fact that tech talk information is being shared, knowledge articles being available, and other new features not available in the past are now present which may be a way to encourage more interaction.

5. What motivated you to contribute to the community?

When I first started, the communities and ARSList resources provided so much value to me. Once I felt comfortable enough in my knowledge I decided to contribute like others had done before me that allowed me to move forward with this career.

6. What message would you like to share with the rest of the community?

This Community is one of, if not the best, resources that can be in any person who works on this technology needs to have in their toolboxes.

7) AI tool/Any tech tool which you use frequently: I have some older tools that are no longer available that I find invaluable to quickly find things in a system e.g. ARUtilies, but generally I am not using AI tools but can see the value as when I worked for Fusion they were/are/have developed some amazing AI based applications.

8) Movie: Too many to list, but the first movie I went to was Star Wars so Empire Strikes Back is up there.

9) Favourite Food: BBQ, Texas BBQ.

10) Favorite Book: Anything that I can learn from, or just a good story fact or fiction. I like biographies e.g. Sports people, to understand their drive and motivation to achieve what they have.

11) Role Model/Influencer:

My wife, her tenacity and drive is like no other.

12) 3 items which you cannot live without:

Food, Water and my family 😊
