Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Web Shield?

Web Shield checks web URLs and certificates to ensure they’re safe before a network connection is made. As more and more online services are moving to HTTPS-by-default or even HTTPS-exclusive, hackers are increasingly targeting these sites. That’s why it’s imperative for security software to check even these encrypted websites. To address this, our trusted Web Shield technology scans HTTPS sites for malware and other dangers. We offer the strongest HTTPS security without having to sacrifice convenience, as we verify website certificates rather than replacing them with our own. HTTPS scanning detects and decrypts TLS/SSL-protected traffic. Additionally, this feature adds compatibility for SPDY+HTTPS/ HTTP 2.0 traffic. In summary, we check HTTPS sites without disrupting users’ browsing experience.

  • What is File and Mail Shield?

Like the Web Shield, our File Shield and Mail Shield protect essential — and often vulnerable — parts of PCs. Mail Shield scans incoming and outgoing emails to ensure they are free of malware, while File Shield quickly scans files that are opened or downloaded on a PC to ensure they are malware-free.

  • What is Behavior Shield?

Behavior Shield monitors all the programs that are currently installed on devices and carefully observes their behavior. Behavior Shield does not ‘watch’ what the user is doing, only what the software itself is trying to accomplish. If it notices something uncharacteristic for that program type (for example, a PDF reader program trying to download something from the web), Behavior Shield is triggered, stops the action, and reports the behavior to the user — preventing malicious programming from becoming deeply entrenched in a PC. Any undiscovered threats will then be reported and added to our expanding threat database. Users can add programs they trust and Behavior Shield will leave them unsupervised. Information on trusted programs is fed into Avast’s extensive cloud-based database, helping Behavior Shield prevent false positives.

  • What is CyberCapture?

AVG’s CyberCapture technology allows us to detect unknown files that might be a threat and analyze them in real time. CyberCapture runs in the cloud to provide zero-second protection, quickly detecting unrecognized files.

At its core, CyberCapture is a cloud-based smart file scanner. Rather than relying on the latest definition updates, CyberCapture isolates unknown files in a safe environment and automatically establishes a two-way communication channel with the AVG Threat Labs. This allows for immediate analysis, providing a first response line of defense against new, never-before reported threats.

To analyze the file, AVG clears away all the false code and misdirection that malware creators use to mask malware’s true intentions. By peeling away layers of obfuscated code, CyberCapture is able to observe the binary level commands inside malware and better understand the instructions hidden there. Once a file has been analyzed, AVG tells the user whether the file is safe or dangerous.

  • What is password protection?

AVG Password Protection is a tool that secures your passwords stored in web browsers against malware and unwanted applications. Stored passwords are vulnerable to theft if left unprotected. This feature allows you to specify which apps have access to reading, changing, or deleting your passwords saved in browsers.

  • What is Smart Scan?

Smart Scan lets users scan many issues with one click and discover features that could further improve their PC. To speed up the scanning process, Smart Scan combines scans for viruses, software updates, new features, and performance issues into one concentrated scan. Once completed, it shows the itemized results and, if there are any issues, offers tools and suggestions to fix them. Smart Scan is lightweight, allows for parallel scanning, and can be scheduled by the user.

  • Why do I need a firewall in my antivirus?

While Windows offers a free firewall, it is not nearly robust enough for most business security needs and offers very few configuration options. AVG Business Firewall, on the other hand, offers better outbound protection and configurability than Windows, while remaining invisible to the user. When set to ‘Public Network’ mode, AVG Firewall protects the user's privacy even further. It blocks all incoming connections from the network, preventing sensitive data leaks and traffic-stealing attacks.

  • Why do I need patch management?

57% of data breaches are attributed to poor patch management. Prompt patching is vital for cybersecurity. When a new patch is released, attackers use software that looks at the underlying vulnerability in the application being patched. This is something that hackers perform quickly, allowing them to release malware to exploit the vulnerability within hours of a patch release. Applying security patches is vital to prevent hackers and cybercriminals from exploiting vulnerabilities that could halt operations.

However, patching is extremely time-consuming. Each patch needs to be reviewed, prioritized, and then tested to make sure it won’t break existing systems. When there are dozens of patches to evaluate, this process can easily take days, if not longer, which pulls resource-strapped IT professionals away from other critical initiatives.

AVG Patch Management automates the patching process to save time and money. It simplifies installation and configuration and uses powerful, automated discovery and deployment features to keep your business safe and compliant with industry regulations and business requirements.

  • Does AVG Patch Management support third-party applications?

Yes, our solution offers patching support for Microsoft Windows and thousands of popular vendors like iTunes®, Oracle® Java, Adobe® Flash® and Reader, and more.

  • Is patching available for Windows and MacOS?

At the moment, it is only available for Windows. MacOS is coming soon.

  • What are the advantages of the AVG Cloud Management Console?

The AVG Cloud Management Console gives you the freedom to remotely manage all your devices and AVG solutions deployed in your network from a single platform. It provides real-time visibility of threats, detailed reporting, and management capabilities that are easy to implement and maintain — reducing overhead cost while delivering complete protection.
