I do not usually watch movies that I have read the book to, but I have made a few exception, most of them Stephen King. I am a huge fan and The Mist was one of my favorite books. I had not previously watched this movie and I wish I had read the reviews before I did, I would not have watched it. The ending, was absolutely stupid. I loved the rest of the movie, which is why I still gave it 2 stars, but the ending was so far off from the story that I could not believe it (with an ending that was more honest to the characters it would have been 5 stars). I understand that the movies are usually different from the books, usually for the better, kids don't die, limbs aren't chopped off only broken...things like that. I had figured they may have "happied" up the ending for this book as well instead of leaving them in limbo, but no. Instead of leaving them in a limbo, with a glimmer of hope, they broke one of Stephen King's biggest rules. I have read that he liked the ending, but I can't see how. One of King's biggest rules is "Be Honest". It was not honest to the Characters to have it end that way. This man risked his life time and time again to save his son and those around him. He did not give up, he did everything he could to get them out of the situation alive. His son and his safety was the most important thing to him and he fought tooth and nail to keep him safe. Then he runs out of gas and a second later....I was so upset with it, I shut if off before the movie was done. I don't care who was saved and how it ended after that. It was dishonest to have it end that way. I could see him doing it as the absolute last resort. Not the second he ran out of gas. One, the character in the book was smart enough to stop for gas; two, there were so many cars around he could have siphoned some gas, he could have tried to look around for a building or someplace of safety. They had several days before thirst would have become detrimental and lack of food would have been much longer than that. The man who had done everything right and had thought everything through throughout the whole movie, I am supposed to believe he would just do that without even a few minutes thought or any alternate plans thought of. It was a sloppy ending that did not match the character of the man who had, so far, been strong and intelligent. It was just a, throw it together ending, an...oh let's just get it over with ending.
