This Samsung OLED Smart TV is a beautiful and capable piece of technology that should more than satisfy most TV viewers. After using it for a month, here’s a quick list of pros and cons so you can decide if this TV is for you (longer review after):PROS: easy setup, excellent picture quality all around, decent sound quality, excellent settings adjustability, great compatibility with other Samsung devices, good compatibility with other general devicesCONS: streaming glitches requires use of extra streaming devices, Bluetooth has limited range, can be a little tedious to navigate the home screen and access appsAnd now for a longer review:INITIAL SETUP AND SIZE: The TV arrived securely boxed and intact. It took around 15 minutes to get the TV out of the box and on a stand, and another 20 minutes to complete the setup of the settings, home screen, app sign ins, etc. I got the 55” model, and the size is great for my space. The TV’s profile is very thin, but not too delicate. It sits nicely on its base, and there are two placement options for the base if you have a smaller or larger TV stand. The screen is semi-matte so there is a slight glare, but not too egregious. I can ignore it for the most part. The remote is rather small and simple, but gets the job done. Some reviewers have issues with the remote feeling fragile, but I think it is acceptable enough quality.HOME SCREEN AND APPS: The Samsung home screen comes preset with a couple of common streaming apps (Netflix, Disney+, etc.), and some easy access to some promoted programs. If you navigate to the “Apps” section of the home screen, you can add new apps, such as Paramount Plus and other streaming platforms. Rather annoyingly, you cannot modify the presets on the home screen to include the apps that you manually add through this method. I would like easier access to Paramount Plus rather than having to navigate through a few screens, but at least it can be done.SETTINGS: Settings can be modified in a “quick” way or with much more fine tuning, both through the settings button on the remote (gear icon). The “quick” settings allow you to choose certain preset features, like the AI adaptive picture and/or sound profiles. The more advanced settings let you fine-tune the picture and sound through every conceivable parameter you can imagine. You can also select some more advanced presets this way, including specific color profiles. This was one of the highlights for me with this TV.PICTURE QUALITY: As advertised, this TV features OLED technology and it looks spectacular in person. I tested the TV with the general presets, including the AI optimization. Colors are incredibly well-defined with realistic definition, even at the most saturated color tones. Black tones are VERY black, sometimes almost too much so. There were a few instances where someone’s black hair looked like a void on screen rather than showing hair texture, for example. This can be modified with the advanced picture settings if desired, but I decided to just leave it as-is. Black backgrounds, like outer space, do not seem to have this issue. Skin tones render quite realistically using the presets. Images are crisp quality, and motion is very smooth. Animation renders especially well on-screen because the color quality, high definition, and smooth motion make for a captivating experience.SOUND QUALITY: Sound quality coming from the TV alone is decent, although nothing exceptional. I tested the adaptive AI sound option, and found it to be satisfactory for the programs I watched. Sound is generally very clear and understandable for dialogue. Music is balanced nicely with dialogue and not too loud. It doesn’t have cinematic depth to it, so you will need additional speakers if you want that level of sound quality. As-is, I find the TV’s sound quality to be OK for general viewing.STREAMING QUALITY: This is where we encountered a few issues with the TV, unfortunately. When streaming on a non-preset app (such as Paramount Plus), the TV will intermittently freeze and glitch for several seconds at a time. At worst, the TV will completely freeze and need to be turned off and rebooted. This does not seem to occur with the preset streaming platforms like Amazon Prime. We also encountered another glitch in which 4:3 ratio videos will stretch out to try and fit 16:9 ratio. Going out of and back into the video seems to correct this. Given the streaming issues I encountered, I still find it necessary to use a supplemental streaming device like a Roku, which I would think a Smart TV should negate.DEVICE COMPATIBILITY/BLUETOOTH: The TV can easily and seamlessly switch between connected devices. I tried out the TV’s compatibility with direct casting from my Samsung phone, external HDMI to a laptop, and Bluetooth headphones. Direct casting from my Samsung phone (Galaxy S20FE) is very easy and seamless through “Smart View”, which can be accessed on the phone. It duplicates whatever is on the phone screen. Plugging in a laptop via HDMI cable is also quite easy and seamless. If the TV is already on, it will automatically switch to the laptop when it is plugged in. Bluetooth headphones were a little finicky. You can pair them with the TV but they have a limited range of maybe 5-6 feet away from the TV before you encounter sound glitches.
