Apr 18, 2019 at 1:41 comment added Cort Ammon It looks like you are looking for a scientific answer, but it might be worth nothing that there's a very strong philosophical answer here. "The universe" doesn't need to be any larger than the self. Science doesn't require a universe larger than our skin. However, the equations describing the motion of the universe are much much simpler if we assume that space extends further out from our skins. Lots of results which might be mere happenstance turn out to be physical geometry if we extend space further outwards... which is exactly the reason science thinks the universe is big!
Apr 17, 2019 at 22:20 comment added asgallant Do your aliens need to have an understanding of their solar system comparable to humans in the 1950's? That is, they know of the existence of most/all of the major planets, any asteroid belt(s), and have hypothesized or discovered the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud, thus have a roughly correct idea of the size and composition of the solar system (with the exception of believing the stars are also a part of it).
Apr 17, 2019 at 22:17 comment added Elessar @asgallant while a person in the society might have made the claim, it is thought of as we would think "the earth is flat", so not accepted by any prominent scientist. It is not backed up with evidence convincing the scientific community that it is a better explanation.
Apr 17, 2019 at 21:54 comment added asgallant Do you require that none of the aliens have discovered the truth, or that it is simply not accepted as fact?

Apr 17, 2019 at 15:44 comment added AJFaraday Folks on earth used to think that the stars were painted on a celestial dome. They could believe something similar, that there's an actual barrier where their star system ends.

Apr 16, 2019 at 8:13 comment added ThisIsMe well; considering there are actual, real-life humans that believe that the entire universe is a projection on a dome over the earth ('not even the solar system is real'); this premise isn't that difficult to explain: all you need is a charismatic leader and a few scientifically illiterate followers
