There are many types of abrasives used in sanding and they can be used in many different ways, but all sanding is a way of shaping and smoothing wood with an abrasive-faced sheet material.
Sandpaper is the generic term used for sanding material, and it is often based on paper. But the term may also be extended to mean cloth-backed and film-backed abrasives, as well as to screen-type material such as Abranet.
