Job Description


PLEASE NOTE - This role is primarily based in the Gillingham, Dorset and surrounding areas. To be considered for this role you are required to be located in the desired area or able to consider relocating to the area.


As a multi skilled Field Operations Engineer, you’ll operate and maintain the TETRA Base Stations, Microwave Transmission, Enhancer equipment & Customer Control Room elements of the Airwave Network within agreed SLA’s to maintain service to our customers.


Primary requirements for the role:

  • The successful applicant must demonstrate an aptitude to develop, but not necessarily in all areas listed and work towards building their skill levels.
  • The successful candidate should be a competent individual with a passion for technology. An analytical mindset will be essential for effective troubleshooting, improvement of the network’s functions and successful fault management, carried out in a logical and methodical manner. You should have a mix of great attention to detail and accuracy with a good level of IT literacy.
  • The successful applicant must also be prepared to travel within the UK and stay away from home, on occasions when required.
  • Hold a full valid driver’s licence.
  • Take part in regular training courses (online & classroom based).


Your Role:

  • Microwave transmission operation and maintenance:
  • MUX/DEMUX operation and maintenance.
  • You’ll respond to Network Incidents:
  • Partake in a 1 in 4 call out.
  • You’ll complete planned maintenance procedures:
  • Site planned maintenance visual inspections and functional checks.
  • 18th Edition electrical inspections.
  • Lightning Protection inspections.
  • Customer Control Room inspections.
  • You’ll provide TETRA BTS operation and maintenance:
  • Capacity upgrades/downgrades/Commissioning & health checks
  • VSAT 1st and 2nd line maintenance.
  • Mobile asset deployment and recovery.
  • Mobile base station.
  • Mobile VSAT equipment.
  • Masts.
  • Towable and hand portable generators.
  • Rigging/climbing activities (not essential)
  • Antenna replacement.
  • Feeder/connector test and replacement.
  • Microwave equipment replacement/re-pan.
  • Structural Inspections.


Basic Requirements

Ideally, you will hold an HNC/HND in a Telecommunications, IT Networking or Electronics discipline.


Experience &/or knowledge of (but not all areas listed):

  • Radio frequency principles.
  • Transmission theory.
  • TETRA networks.
  • Microwave Transmission Systems.
  • IP Networking + VOIP.
  • Electrical Qualification such as BS7671 (18th Edition).
  • Working at Height including antenna, ODU & feeder replacement.
  • Cisco CCNA.
  • Microsoft MCSE.
  • VMWare.
  • Red Hat Linux Administrator.
  • RF System Engineering.
  • Line of sight principles.
  • Multiplexors.
  • AC/DC power systems.
  • Aircon units.
  • Test and inspect.
  • Battery theory & practices.
  • Generator theory, practices & deployment.


In order to apply successfully, you must be eligible to live and work in the EU. Documented evidence of the eligibility will be required from candidates as part of the recruitment process.

The candidate will ideally already hold a current UK Security Clearance, or be willing to undergo Security vetting, following a Baseline Personnel Security Screening (BPSS) check. To be eligible for security clearance you must be a resident of the UK for a minimum of 3 years.
