Congratulations to colleagues in our SHES and Transportation teams who were recognised at the Network Rail SHELT awards this week with two wins and a highly commended for their efforts to protect workers and the environment. Our collaborative project with the The University of Salford, developing and implementing a Breathe Easy campaign and air sampling/monitoring schedule, took the ‘Physical Health’ award. This initiative tests robust control management of dust and welding fumes in the workplace, to ensure the wellbeing of our frontline workforce and supply chain. In the ‘Railway that Cares for the Environment’ category, The Environmental Visual Standard, a ground breaking tool, was the day's winner. This innovative tool uses 3D virtual worksites to provide a series of interactable constraints that should be considered during the stages of the project lifecycle, enhancing understanding and planning of onsite environmental constraints. Finally, colleagues were highly commended in ‘Supply Chain Management’ for their integration of a four stage approach to our Supplier portal, enhancing our delivery model. Well done to all involved for overseeing projects that support our core goal of improving life by delivering world-class infrastructure. Our steel team have just completed their largest bridge structure to date, a 40-metre-long x 9-metre-wide bridge for valued client Network Rail. A trial assembly was carried out last week following the completion of this modified NR SDD E-Type bridge, at our state-of-the-art steel fabrication workshop in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. This 400-tonne structure has a half-through deck consisting of 2 steel main girders and a steel floor. Here are just some of the key elements that go into the design and execution of such a large-scale project, requiring the utmost in precision planning: • 400 Tonnes of Weathering Steel (S355 K2W) • 1,500 individual plates • 9,750kgs of welding wire • 11,368 Fabrication Hours (typical welds being 20mm fillet welds and 55mm butt welds) • All Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) completed in-house. • Early Contract Involvement to support design. And there is still plenty of work to be done, as this structure now needs to be transported to its UK site destination, where it will be assembled with over 5,000 bolts. “It was really valuable to see the new facilities that Murphy now have in place and the capabilities to allow fabrication of bridge structures on the scale such as the works being completed for the M62 bridge replacement. The professionalism and quality of everything that has been achieved up to this point has been excellent, particularly given the challenging programme we need to meet for the delivery of this project.” - Matthew Clarke, Senior Project Engineer, Network Rail. Do you know someone who may be interested in working on projects like this? We are currently recruiting for welding apprentices in Newbridge Co. Kildare.
