International not-for-profit working to end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis - for good.

About us

WaterAid is an international not-for-profit, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. Since we started in 1981, we’ve remained resolutely focused on tackling these three essentials that transform people’s lives. Without all three, people can’t live dignified, healthy lives. With all three, they can break free from poverty, unleash their potential and change their lives for good. Children grow up healthy and strong, women and men start small businesses, whole communities start to thrive. It sounds normal and it should be. By inspiring people and sparking chain reactions we help deliver lasting change. By working closely with partners internationally and on the ground in some of the toughest places in the world, we have helped millions of people take control of their lives and build better futures. Now we are working to get safe water, decent toilets and good hygiene to everyone, everywhere by 2030. It’s about more than installing taps, toilets, boreholes and wells. To make lasting change happen on a massive scale, we pool knowledge and resources, link policy makers with people on the ground, change attitudes and behaviours, rally support from people and organisations around the world and convince governments to change laws. Together, we will change millions of lives for the better – and change normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. We strive to be an excellent employer and invest in our people to maximise our impact. We provide a competitive benefits package and a tailored learning and development plan for all employees.

We’ve loved bringing together the iconic Cyndi Lauper with WaterAid to design this one off unique disco loo at Glastonbury Festival- it’s fun with a serious message behind it that 1 in 5 people around the world don’t have access to clean and decent toilets! We can’t thank Cyndi and her team enough for taking time and really caring about the design and highlighting the serious message supporting WaterAid. Girls just wanna have…. Fundamental rights! Ms Lauper commented: “I’m proud to partner with WaterAid at Glastonbury Festival to highlight that toilets shouldn’t be a luxury. One in five people around the world don’t have a decent toilet, which affects their health and dignity. The situation is particularly bad for women, who risk their safety when finding somewhere private to go, and girls are missing out on an education due to a lack of water and toilets in school. Girls and women must have their fundamental rights, which is why I’m helping WaterAid spread the message that clean water and good sanitation will help everyone live the life they deserve.” Do catch Cyndi on the Pyramiid stage at 2.30pm today! #cyndilauper #wateraid #glastonbury #discoloo #glasto #icon #toilet #disco #cleanwater

A new government means it’s time for change. The UN predicts 5 billion people could be living without clean drinking water by 2050. But despite this, UK governments have slashed funding for this basic human right, year after year. Now’s the moment for Keir Starmer to demonstrate global leadership and become a pivotal player in global action around the water crisis. We’re calling on The Labour Party to prioritise clean water in their international development spending. It’s the best way to lead the world toward a safer future. Sign our petition to join us in making sure clean water is a priority for the new government: https://brnw.ch/21wLeve

When communities don't have clean water, it impacts: -their health -their ability to get an education -agriculture and farming -gender equality ...and so much more. But just how big is this problem?

We’re thrilled to welcome Caroline D. to the team! 👋 She’s joined us as a Senior Partnerships Manager, and she’ll be focusing on engaging donors in the UK and EU, especially the FCDO and the EU/European bilateral development agencies. Some things to know about Caroline:   -She brings over 15 years of partnerships management experience, having worked with The British Council in their Brussels office covering the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). -Caroline also spent around 6 years working in the southern and eastern Mediterranean, including for the account of universities and Dutch/French cooperation institutes. -She’s (therefore) a big fan of Mediterranean cuisine – especially Greek, Turkish and Lebanese food. As the climate crisis unfolds, listening to the voices of young people is key 🔑 At the 10th World Water Forum, 85 delegates from the World Youth Parliament for Water raised their voices on water, peace and climate change. After taking part in more than 50 official sessions and side events, they share their successes, challenges and calls for leaders to turn words into action. We're proud to support such a passionate group of young people with Secrétariat International de l'Eau - International Secretariat for Water, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Agence de l'Eau Artois-Picardie 🙌

What does Wimbledon have to do with water? For one thing, water keeps the iconic grass courts here at All England Lawn Tennis Club maintained, and keeps the top players hydrated. Our partnership with the Wimbledon Foundation has helped us change lives through water, bringing hope and security to communities across nine countries around the world living without this basic essential. Last month, we created a stunning mosaic on one of these courts, made up of rackets, balls and nets. It depicted an image of Anja and Dylan, a mother and son in Madagascar, who, through our work together, now have clean water close to home. Clean water is a game changer.
