What are the safety risks and additional safety requirements for ammonia? In this video, LR's Liam Blackmore outlines the risks and toxicity implications of ammonia as a shipping fuel and how LR has addressed these in our Rules, including the additional requirement of assigning toxic area zoning. Nuclear power could transform the maritime industry with emissions-free shipping, whilst extending the life cycle of vessels and removing the uncertainty of fuel and refuelling infrastructure development, but regulation and safety considerations must be addressed for its widespread commercial adoption. Mark Tipping, LR's Global Power to X Director, recently spoke to Riviera Maritime Media Ltd about the role that nuclear power could play in helping the maritime industry meet its greenhouse gas reduction ambitions. “The level of ambition that maritime has to create a low- or zero-fuel bunkers network is remarkable, but the fact remains that there will not be enough alternative fuels to go around, at least in the medium term (2035). Many operators, especially ships owned by smaller companies that don’t have the resources to augment their own fuel supply chains, will be left out in the cold. In many ways, you could say that nuclear will enable a more equitable low-carbon future.” Read more: https://loom.ly/9zQ9QyI #Nuclear #Maritime #EnergyTransition
