📚Gabriela Gómez Mantilla was also one of the three members of the Francophone team at the Jean-Pictet 2024 Competition. Here is her experience: "The Jean-Pictet is not a regular moot court, and even the application to the competition was unique. One of the questions our team had to address involved the existence of extraterrestrial species that had developed their own version of International Humanitarian Law. What would happen if their legal system did not recognize the protection offered by the Red Cross emblem? In just a few words, we had to explain how we would convince aliens to apply our IHL. Finding sources to respond to this question was a fun challenge that even led us to science fiction at some point. After extensive reading on interstellar criminal law and peaceful relations with extraterrestrial intelligence, we returned to Jean Pictet’s Principles of International Humanitarian Law. We realized the answer might lie in plain sight: the definition of humanitarianism and the moral sources of IHL".

📢 We continue sharing our students's experience from this year's Jean-Pictet Competition. Here is the story of Nikolaus Geyer: "Throughout the competition, we participated in 11 rounds. In every round, we played a different role: military commanders, ICRC legal advisors, members of affected communities, or even members of non-state armed groups. This diversity made the experience highly educational. Unlike in some other academic exercises we did not stop at demonstrating abstract legal knowledge. We had to find arguments appropriate for our roles and present them accordingly. This made IHL and the high stakes - sometimes literally life or death decisions - it deals with, come to life. The different roles also created entertaining situations. In one round, I was supposed to impersonate a fictional Captain Martinez with my team mates as legal advisors. I had memorised the name repeatedly, only to confidently introduce myself as Captain Ramirez. Resolving this mistake without breaking immersion was an unexpected, yet refreshing challenge. (Apologies for the shock again to my team mates :))".

⚖ The Jean-Pictet Competition through the eyes of our students! We will be sharing the experiences of our brilliant students who participated at this year's Jean-Pictet Competition. Here is Marina's story: "Representing the University of Glasgow at the 42nd French Edition of the Jean-Pictet Competition was undoubtedly a highly enriching experience, both academically and personally. Through a set of various complex challenges based on fictitious armed conflicts, our knowledge of general international law and international humanitarian law was rigorously tested over the course of a week as legal, military and political advisors, with sometimes as little as five minutes of preparation before an assessment (with that time also including running from one location to the conveniently furthest building). This uniquely immersive environment has solidified our practical skills in the field, culminating in our team reaching the finals and securing second place. While we take pride in this achievement, the enduring camaraderie forged with fellow participants from across the globe remains the most cherished aspect of our experience. We are grateful for the support of the University of Glasgow and the ILGSPD programme which has allowed us to participate in this incredible opportunity and become part of the global community of Jean-Pictetists".

Pleased to share a new background paper by our student Chloe Young, who traces the evolution of Russia & China’s perspectives on international law’s applicability in cyberspace by analysing their contributions to the Open-Ended Working Group on ICTs since 2019. The background paper can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/eV8ZTC-K Reviewing a broad range of written and oral government statements, the paper demonstrates that Russia and China advocate for the creation of a new legally binding instrument on cyberspace due to the ‘alleged gaps’ in existing international law relating to the qualification of computer attacks as armed attacks, attribution of malicious cyber activity, definition of illegal cyber behaviour, establishing the responsibility of manufacturers, countering online terrorist activity, and addressing the dissemination of illegal online content. The paper also identifies Russia and China’s positions on which issues fall outside the OEWG’s mandate and the extent to which the existing international law applies in cyberspace.
