In this edition of #CultivatingKnowledge we're talking all things #LifecycleAssessments! 🌱 One of the key tools in evaluating the environmental impact of any product, including food, is Lifecycle Assessments (LCAs). But what exactly are LCAs, and why are they crucial in the cultivated meat industry? 🤔 LCAs are comprehensive studies that assess the environmental impact of a product from its creation to its disposal. This "cradle-to-grave" approach looks at every stage of the product's lifecycle, including raw material extraction, manufacturing, distribution, usage and end-of-life disposal. In the context of cell-cultivated products, LCAs help us understand the true environmental footprint of producing meat and other ingredients, like delicious cultivated fat, from cultured cells. 🥓 Many foodtech companies have published LCAs over the years. A comprehensive example is the CE Delft LCA, conducted in partnership with the The Good Food Institute. Their report highlights some exciting findings: producing cultivated meat has significantly lower environmental impacts compared to conventional industrial factory farming. Key benefits include: 🌍 Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: cultivated meat production generates up to 92% fewer greenhouse gases, helping to combat climate change. 🚰 Lower water usage: the process uses up to 78% less water, making it more sustainable. 🌳 Decreased Land Use: Cultivated meat requires up to 95% less land, freeing up space for natural habitats and reducing deforestation. While these benefits are promising, the cultivated meat industry is still in its infancy and scaling up production to meet global demand remains a challenge. Additionally, LCAs, while comprehensive, rely on certain assumptions and projections that may evolve as technology and methods improve. 📈 However, peer-reviewed studies have repeatedly shown that, by opting for cultivated meat, we can make a meaningful difference in reducing our environmental footprint while promoting a more reliable and sustainable food supply chain. LCAs also provide valuable insights that guide us in refining our processes and achieving our sustainability goals. ♻ At Hoxton Farms, we're excited to contribute to the meaningful sustainability improvements that cultivated food can deliver. A proud moment: Hoxton Farms and AIS have won the prestigious ‘Design & Build Project of the Year’ award at the Mix Interiors 2024 Awards! 🏆 This accolade recognises the extraordinary transformation of a blank space in an iconic city high-rise into a cutting-edge lab production facility and workspace. In today’s edition of #cultivatingknowledge we focus on a key piece of technology: bioreactors. Traditional bioreactors look a lot like the fermenters used to brew beer, but they are sophisticated devices where mammalian cells grow and thrive to create delicious animal products - without the animals. 🍺 So, what exactly are bioreactors? Think of them as high-tech incubators. These meticulously controlled environments provide the ideal conditions for cells to multiply. By maintaining the perfect balance of temperature, nutrients, and oxygen, bioreactors ensure that cells can grow efficiently and safely. Essentially - we convince the cells that they’re still inside the animal! 🐖 In the context of cell cultivated food, bioreactors enable us to produce animal products without the need for traditional animal farming. This process not only reduces the environmental footprint but also aligns with ethical standards, offering a cruelty-free alternative to meat production. 🥓 The journey of mammalian cells in bioreactors begins with a small sample of cells. These cells are placed in a nutrient-rich medium inside the bioreactor. With precise control over conditions such as pH and temperature, the cells begin to proliferate, forming the basis of what will eventually become delicious, sustainable meat. 🥩 The cellular agriculture industry has made tremendous strides in developing and optimising bioreactor technology. At Hoxton Farms, our advances and proprietary tech have allowed us to scale production affordably and quickly with minimal technical risk. However, challenges remain. Scaling up bioreactors to industrial levels while maintaining quality and safety standards is a complex task.
