An open letter to Ed Miliband, newly appointed Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. While we commend the new government's stated ambition to turn the UK into a clean energy superpower, we believe that more attention needs to be placed on how to decarbonise the UK's unavoidable gas demand. The UK currently consumes three times more gas than electricity by energy content. We believe biomethane produced via AD to be a proven and scalable solution to gas decarbonisation – while also presenting a key opportunity to deliver permanent GHG removals. We, therefore, encourage Labour to support the UK’s growing biomethane BECCS industry by: - Incorporating biomethane into Labour’s clean energy strategy - Enabling biomethane plants to access the UK’s carbon storage facilities UK government

Established in 2010, Future Biogas are a highly experienced developer and operator of AD plants across the U.K.
About us
Established in 2010, Future Biogas is at the forefront of the anaerobic digestion industry. We are a highly experienced developer and operator of AD plants across the UK, and able to provide full service capabilities of development, construction, operations, ongoing compliance and asset management, both to our own projects and to those of third parties. We operate plants for JLEN, Aviva, Bio Capital, and Aberdeen City Council. Our plants convert a wide range of feedstocks into clean, renewable energy, through a process of anaerobic digestion which produces biogas. Biogas can either be used to generate green electricity, or upgraded into biomethane and injected in to the UK’s national gas network.

A morning of learning, reflecting, and sharing this morning with various colleagues from Future Biogas as part of our internal Carbon Literacy Training. The delivery team of Finn Boykew, Dr Nick Primmer, and Ross Taylor have VERY clearly put a huge amount of work into it! The first 3 hours were nearly split into a mixture of individual tasks (quizzes), group tasks with feedback, and presentations by our internal experts in #Sustainability, #Policy, and #ESG as we explored the science and impact of climate change. A couple of resources that I would recommend others take a look at: www.carbonmap.org - The Carbon Map by KILN https://go.ted.com/6wSE - The emergent patterns of climate change by Gavin Schmidt Looking forward to—and slightly apprehensive of—the deeper dive into our personal carbon footprints (with much more also on the agenda) tomorrow! #BECCS #unsubsidisedbiomethane #biogenicCO2

Biogas can play a significant role in the future UK energy system with technologies that are already well established. The REA Biogas steering group welcomes the new The Labour Party government and has set out a comprehensive action plan that will ensure resilient, longstanding support for the biogas sector. The REA’s Biogas steering Group is part of the REA Green Gas Forum, which has worked incessantly to overcome barriers to the development and operation of green gas plants and help shape Government policy to support green gases. We've set out what we believe are 5 key steps to kick-starting a viable market for green gas, enabling it to play a significant role in the decarbonisation of heat and transport, and supporting a circular economy in agriculture. https://lnkd.in/emzgChwz #Biogas #GreenGas #UKETS #AnaerobicDigestion

Fantastic to be back out on farm with one of our newest growers today in Leicestershire - amazing what a difference two months make! Praying for some sun now, we’ve had enough rain! Future Biogas #maize #anaerobicdigestion #breakcrop

It was a pleasure to welcome Cadent Gas Limited's board to our largest plant, Vulcan Renewables, this week. Watching large-scale AD in action, we discussed the great untapped potential of biomethane in the UK, recognising its ability to form a significant proportion of the UK's gas grid - heating homes and fuelling industry. As a ready to use and scalable technology, biomethane is taking a prominent role in Cadent's decarbonisation strategy. As the UK transitions to net zero, the demands of the gas grid will change, in its composition, energy flow and its integration with the wider energy network. Nonetheless, biomethane will remain a no regrets option, delivering benefits across the network.

Today at the World Biogas Expo, Future Biogas Business Development Director, Rebecca Wheeler delivered a talk as part of a peer discussion on best practice in digestate management. Other participants in the session included Javier Contamina Arjol of Nalón Minerals, Peter Hammond of CCm Technologies and Gary Lyons of Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute. The purpose of the session was to explore how digestate management and its implementation is important for soil stability, food quality, food security and biodiversity. Future Biogas Policy Lead, Dr Nick Primmer recently presented as part of a webinar organised by BiogasWorld discussing the opportunities and challenges of the UK biogas and biomethane market. Nick’s talk covered the current status quo of UK gas demand and usage, how that demand can be reduced and how the remaining unavoidable gas demand can be replaced by high quality biomethane. Looking at the biogas industry today, 6-7 TWh of biomethane is being produced from around 120 operational plants. An additional 10TWh is being used to generate electricity. In the future, it is predicted that 100+ TWh could be generated from a variety of different feedstocks. At this scale, biomethane would make a material difference to the UK’s gas sector, potentially fulfilling its unavoidable gas demand (95-260 TWh) in its entirety. However, in policy terms, the emphasis has historically been placed on waste feedstocks. At Future Biogas, we believe in the opportunity to also help decarbonise agriculture with break crops grown using regenerative farming practices to provide another important feedstock for AD. Nick goes on to discuss the unsubsidised business model underpinning our new generation of AD plants, which break away from taxpayer funding through government subsidy – and therefore demonstrate true additionality in terms of carbon savings to potential gas off-takers. You can view Nick’s talk and others from Sara Bartle from the REA and Kai Oosterheert from Membrane Systems Europe BV here: https://lnkd.in/ewf_449K
