  • 🎀 Missed our latest newsletter? Here's a glimpse into a fascinating read about the #Barbie exhibition at the Design Museum by our researcher, Michelle Kazi! 🌟 Diving into decades of fashion and cultural evolution, the exhibition, attended by our CEO Tamara Cincik, celebrates Barbie as a beacon of inclusivity and a mirror to societal shifts. It's more than just play; it's a look at how an iconic doll has shaped, and been shaped by, the changing tides of society. From her first Dreamhouse symbolizing independence to modern iterations reflecting progressive ideals, Barbie’s world is a vibrant showcase of style and social evolution. We explore the impact of Barbie's fashion evolution from 1950s elegance to today's inclusive representations, highlighting her role in pushing the boundaries of fashion and female empowerment. The exhibition also underscores the importance of sustainability and innovation, reflecting Barbie's adaptation to societal expectations and her enduring influence on generations. This isn't just about a doll; it's about the aspirations she represents and the future she inspires. Dive deeper into our discussion and learn how Barbie continues to influence modern society, from fashion to politics. • Missed our newsletter last week? Here's a recap about Groundswell by our researcher, Michelle Kazi. Michelle represented Fashion Roundtable at Groundswell, a key event focused on regenerative agriculture. This event gathers farmers, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss sustainable farming practices that promote soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. One of the highlights was Fibreshed, a non-profit organisation dedicated to regional and regenerative fiber systems. Fibreshed connects farmers, designers, and artisans to create sustainable, locally-sourced textile communities. Their "soil-to-soil" philosophy ensures that fibers enrich the soil from cultivation to end-of-life, emphasizing natural fibers, dyes, and biodegradable materials. Fibreshed’s work on wool is particularly noteworthy. By promoting locally-sourced wool and supporting local wool farmers, they reduce waste and create a closed-loop system where wool is used sustainably. This aligns wool production with ecological practices, enhancing soil health and biodiversity. A key takeaway from Groundswell is the potential of wool. A significant amount of UK wool is currently wasted, but with political support and industry collaboration, this can be mitigated. Wool and leather can play a crucial role in sustainable fashion, fostering a circular textile economy. At Fashion Roundtable, we are committed to promoting sustainability within the fashion industry. We advocate for policies supporting natural fibers like wool and leather and sustainable practices like natural dyes. We look forward to collaborating with organisations like Fibreshed to create a future where fashion is both beautiful and environmentally responsible. • Curious about what the election results in France could mean? Here's our policy researcher, Michelle Kazi's take on the situation 👇 France's recent 2024 parliamentary elections have resulted in a hung parliament, with Emmanuel Macron's Ensemble securing only 161 seats, while the left-wing New Popular Front and Marine Le Pen's National Rally took 188 and 142 seats respectively. This fragmentation has thrown France into political chaos, complicating the formation of a stable government and creating uncertainty for Corporate France. In contrast, the UK, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has established a strong, centrist government focused on resetting relations with the EU. This administration promotes a balanced mix of market economy, state intervention, and social justice, offering a stable environment for economic growth and international cooperation. This stability is crucial as France grapples with its political turmoil. The economic repercussions of France's instability are significant. Investors are wary of the proposed economic policies, which could exacerbate the country's budget deficit and public finances. The political gridlock threatens to derail Macron's pro-business reforms, raising fears of increased taxes and regulatory burdens. The French fashion industry, a global leader, faces challenges due to this political turmoil. In the UK, the stable government under Starmer provides a more favourable environment for the fashion industry to thrive. British fashion brands have the opportunity to lead in sustainability and innovation, supported by clear and supportive policies. As France's political impasse continues, Britain's new centrist government offers stability and hope. With a strong mandate and a clear vision, the UK is well-positioned to navigate post-Brexit complexities and attract investment, fostering economic growth. • Thank you to the Liberal Democrats for hosting the in-person launch of "The Power of Creativity" last night! 🎉 It’s great to be discussing the creative sector, and we hope fashion is part of key conversations given its crucial role. The UK fashion and textile industry is a powerhouse, contributing £62 billion to the UK GDP, supporting 1.3 million jobs, and raising over £23 billion in tax revenues. This equates to £1 in every £34 of the UK’s total gross value added and one in every 25 jobs. The sector's impact is far-reaching, from creating innovative designs to supporting diverse demographics and regional economies. The fashion industry’s potential for driving economic growth and social impact is immense, and with the right support, it can lead the way in fostering a sustainable and inclusive future for the UK. 🌟

  • The clock is ticking as the world races towards the 2030 deadline for the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With less than six years left, the fashion industry, a global powerhouse, finds itself at a critical juncture. Despite making strides, there remains a significant gap between current practices and the ambitious targets set by the SDGs. The fashion industry accounts for 10% of global CO₂ emissions, and in the UK alone, one million tonnes of textiles are discarded annually. Garment workers worldwide often earn below a living wage, with modern slavery pervasive in supply chains. Sustainability in the fashion sector continues to lag, and businesses need support to anticipate changing regulations and adapt effectively amidst an ever-evolving ESG landscape. In response, Fashion Roundtable is partnering with the United Nations Global Compact Network for the Fashion Sector Exchange. This event aims to mobilise key stakeholders across the fashion industry, providing a platform for business, government, academia, and civil society representatives to understand current sustainability issues, learn from best practices, and inspire action through networking. Fashion Roundtable is committed to driving the fashion industry towards a sustainable future. Our partnership with the UN Global Compact Network and the Fashion Sector Exchange aims to catalyze action and ensure that by 2030, the fashion industry will lead in achieving the SDGs. Join us at the Fashion Sector Exchange to be part of the change. Together, we can build a sustainable and equitable future for the fashion industry and beyond.
