How can we change the tide when it comes to reducing the emissions impact of real estate? The first step – accepting responsibility. It is no secret that real estate is the largest producer of emissions, with this in mind it is important that we not only accept responsibility but also talk about the impact shorter term deadlines have on long term strategy, the progress we have made so far, how we can interweave ESG into everyday decision making as well as what our ambitions are moving forward. As a sustainability pioneer, this is the focus of our further development and an integral part of our corporate DNA. 👉 We prepare our sustainability report according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. In doing so, we create transparency – not because of legal requirements, but through our own initiative – for everyone who wants to find out about our values, principles and our corporate actions. 🔜 And what happens next? In the future, we will adapt our report to meet the new requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD). Our Corporate Sustainability Team is driving this forward with the Board of Directors through a cross-departmental CSRD Steering Committee.

Recently, the international Drees & Sommer Expert Talk, Future-proof Educational and Research Buildings, brought together a diverse group of international professionals at the field lab of The Green Village of TU Delft. Hosted by Drees & Sommer Netherlands, our Expert Talk delved deep into #Sustainability, #Innovation, and #Campus #Development. The discussions emphasized the importance of a holistic approach, integration of eco-friendly elements, material assessments, and a focus on environmental, social, and economic considerations throughout the building's lifecycle. It underscored the necessity of interdisciplinary cooperation to address the intricate challenges faced by educational institutions in creating infrastructure that is truly future-proof. From the UK, our colleague Richard Murray provided his insights around campus development,  including the complexities that come with working with historic buildings when decarbonising education campuses. As part of this, Richard shared how his team are supporting the University of Oxford with the heat decarbonisation plan for their science area. Hubert Linssen, TU Delft's Program Manager Sustainable Campus, shared the institution's commitment to achieving a climate-neutral campus by 2030 through "practice what you teach" initiatives, innovation fueled by resource scarcity, and using the campus as a testing ground for sustainability. Senior Architect and Partner of UNStudio, Jaap-Willem Kleijwegt presented the remarkable #ECHO building – an energy-generating structure that embodies TU Delft's sustainability goals with its adaptable and user-friendly design. Innovative start-ups like Madaster Netherlands, Paviljoen III, Biosphere Solar, and BlueBlocks Concepts showcased their sustainability initiatives, including circular building material registries, urban rooftop energy transition projects, and circular and equitable solar panels. While challenges were acknowledged, the overall feeling was optimistic.
