What can the individual do to help re-green our cities? And did you know you can get insects delivered by Royal Mail, but why would you? Find out in this week’s ‘Sandbox’ FOMO5... As individuals, we can collectively make a difference to the world around us. When it comes to re-greening our urban areas, there is something we can all do to help, whether it be inspiring each other to plant more in our gardens or window boxes, or even working with the local community to create more urban greenery. Every new bud and seedling helps – and Tamsin helps by suggesting different ways each of us can contribute to a greener landscape. In our latest ‘Sandbox’ episode - ‘Urban Wonderlands: grey or green?’ - our guests explore ways in which the individual can help. Colin Byrne, Partner, Buro Happold, said: “I often think about my dad when I'm thinking about how to start looking at gardening and biodiversity in your space. “He also removed a big patch of concrete paving from a garden area, which is great because it's turning it into a sponge garden.” And then Colin goes on to explain the rather unusual packages his father ordered via Royal Mail – you'll just have to listen to find out what was inside! For more practical advice, keep an eye out across the Buro Happold social channels and all podcast platforms for our weekly FOMO5s following each monthly episode. The episode features Buro Happold engineering experts Colin Byrne and Aaron Grainger, special guest Tamsin Westhorpe, and our regular host Andy Duncan. At Buro Happold, we recognise that even seemingly innocuous elements like street lighting can have a profound impact on wildlife. Our biodiversity and lighting experts collaborated closely with globally-recognised turtle and artificial light assessment specialists to advise on the development of a major tourism destination on the shores of the Red Sea - AMAALA, Saudi Arabia. The goal? To ensure that the nesting beaches of critically-endangered hawksbill sea turtles remain undisturbed by one of the Middle East’s most ambitious projects. Our Framework Action Plan ensures that AMAALA thrives as a model of sustainable development, where nature and progress coexist harmoniously. Why put the visitor at the heart of a mega-event? The reason is... legacy. The success of large-scale events as viewed by host cities and nations is hugely reliant on the experiences of those who attend. How do you ensure the visitor experience lives up to the hype? Buro Happold’s global experience lead Goc O'Callaghan looks at four key areas that planning committees need to address. Multiple global shifts. Complex challenges. Siloed working. The need for business advice alongside sound technical expertise is greater than ever, which is where advisory at Buro Happold comes in. Our long-standing relationships with our clients allow us to support them through every strategic shift, across multiple projects and tiers of work. We are client-centric, not project-centric. We’re one of the very few organisations who understand business issues and the engineering behind them. We assist clients with the most complex business management challenges as well as the planning and design of assets, public realm and infrastructure. These were the key takeaways from a recent advisory team meet-up, where the newly-formed group discussed strategy, growth, focus areas and ongoing project work. Led by Buro Happold partner and UK advisory lead Robert Moyser, the group met to discuss vision, team structure, key areas of focus and core capabilities. With expertise in sustainability, ESG and energy transition, digital advisory, digital twins, experience advisory, strategy and operating models within the tourism, entertainment and sport sectors, asset management optimisation and more represented in the room, discussions were lively and informative, with new connections made and existing ones strengthened. The day ended with pizza and drinks in the sun at the #FeatherstoneBuilding. With many thanks to Craig Palmer for capturing it in film. Many thanks also to all those who shared their projects Mark C., Andy Preece, Goc O'Callaghan, David Green, Tom Hopton and Michał Gryko. Buro Happold advisory. AMAALA will be an ultra-luxury tourism destination comprising of more than 4,000km² of land along Saudi Arabia’s north-western Red Sea coastline. Buro Happold delivered a comprehensive strategic overview for how AMAALA could take shape and advised on environmental best practice for the development. AMAALA will feature a range of luxury hospitality venues and cultural attractions – from upscale hotels, private estate guest villas and Arabian-inspired botanical gardens showcasing works of art and sculpture, to wellness spas and world-class sporting facilities hosting everything from polo to golf to falconry. Buro Happold was commissioned to examine the project region at an in-depth strategic level, advising in detail on what’s physically there, whether the region’s systems are capable of development, the demographics of who currently lives near the development, as well as a careful examination of what the challenges would be for a major transformation to take place in the region. There is no building, area of public realm or city in the world that hasn’t been shaped and influenced by engineers, architects, designers or planners. We continue to introduce you to women across Buro Happold who are making their mark on the built environment through the work that they do. Olga Stankowska, associate mechanical engineer at Buro Happold, is currently seconded from our Berlin office to live in Jeddah, playing a key role in the development of what will be a new cultural institution for the Middle East: The Royal Diriyah Opera House in Riyadh. This will stand as a showcase project, in terms of sustainability, security and digital infrastructure, as well as a landmark piece of cultural architecture. “It is a very nice feeling to work on something that brings cultural value to the country, that is changing so rapidly, and where access to artistic events can be limited. Local people tell me that they want these kinds of cultural places to be developed.” Olga Stankowska, Buro Happold. “Is Vienna the world’s most liveable city for everyone?” This was the question our C:lab group explored on a recent visit to the city. The group explored liveability from different angles through four thematic city tours and conversations with local people. These first-hand experiences enabled the group to uncover fresh perspectives, identifying key aspects of liveability as well as the emerging challenges the city may face. Learn about their findings here: https://buro.im/4cednpg Urban C:lab is a programme initiated by Buro Happold focussed on exploring emergent disruption in the built and natural environment. #burohappold #engineering #consultancy #advisory #builtenvironment #construction #austria #vienna

When it comes to the climate, we believe in the power of action. London Climate Action Week (LCAW), an annual festival that focuses on global solutions to climate change, was an opportunity for Buro Happold to learn and contribute to the power of collective climate action. Here, our experts reflect on the key takeaways that they feel will benefit clients, across the areas of leadership, investment, resilience, disclosures and nature – as well as the critical next steps clients should take to play a role in the acceleration of ambitious action on the climate transition. “The science isn’t changing. Evidence mounts of the impact that a changing climate has, right now, on every corner of the world. This is the moment to accelerate action, not stop. “With many leading businesses committed to net zero and mobilised for action, the road to 2030 is set for a rapid scale up of investment and the capturing of business benefits – including value creation, reduced risk and long-term competitive advantage.” Duncan Price, sustainability/climate global lead at Buro Happold Hear more from Duncan, and more Buro Happold experts Margarethe Theseira, Roger Savage, Jane P. How can education lead to environmental benefits and help biodiversity to thrive? And how does this impact all of us in a positive way? Find out more in this week’s ‘Sandbox’ FOMO5... The upkeep of green space and city parks is a challenge in many areas of the UK. Often, plants won’t be suited to their environment, and community gardens, for example, are sometime not maintained in the correct way. The problem, as Tamsin Westhorpe, special guest in our most recent podcast episode, identifies, is that we have a skills shortage within the industry. The solution? Integrating ecology, horticulture, and other related subjects into our UK education systems. Tamsin said: “My dream would be that children are taught horticulture at school, so environmental horticulture, not just at junior school, but right the way through the school system, so they fully understand the value of it. “And hopefully they will then look at taking on jobs like horticulture, like garden design, like ecology. It will become a really important career opportunity. And then, they will, in turn, continue the work that we're doing now. And they'll know so much more, and our cities will be well cared for. And right plant, right place is what I'd like to see.” Keep an eye out across the Buro Happold social channels and all podcast platforms for our weekly FOMO5s following each monthly episode. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) – what is it and why does it matter to all of us? Find out in this week’s ‘Sandbox’ FOMO5... In our latest Sandbox episode - ‘Urban Wonderlands: grey or green?’, our panel explores the importance of the recent BNG regulation, and how it can be applied throughout urban areas and across the UK. With 70% of nature in global decline, it is imperative that all industries take collective action to preserve biodiversity, particularly in urban areas. The new BNG policy is all about leaving nature in a measurably better state than it was before within new developments in the built environment. Aaron Grainger, Associate Director, UK Ecology and Biodiversity Management, Buro Happold, said: “Now, we need to assess a site and it is then assigned a numerical value based on lots of different parameters. You then look at what a development is going to provide in terms of biodiversity, which again is assigned a numerical parameter. And then you compare the two and the policy requires developers to leave nature in a 10 percent better state than before.” Following each monthly episode of ‘Sandbox’, there are weekly FOMO5s where we will pick short, engrossing excerpts (under five minutes) as ‘quick listens’ - we know how busy everyone is! These could be anything from valuable insights, thought-provoking elements, or even practical advice… The episode features Buro Happold engineering experts Colin Byrne and Aaron Grainger, special guest Tamsin Westhorpe, and our regular host Andy Duncan.
