Employee Assistance Training and Education

Employee Assistance offers workshops on a variety of issues either by request from departments or by open enrollment in classes. Topics include, but are not limited to: stress management, instant relaxation, and coping with transition/change. 

Monthly Offerings

Monthly Meditation and Mindfulness for Faculty and Staff

The regular practice of mindfulness meditation has a demonstrable impact on psychological and physical health, improving mood, decreasing stress, strengthening the immune system, and supporting sleep.

Be Well at Work Employee Assistance and Work/Life invite faculty and staff to join us for a monthly meditation group which will offer a moment of relaxation and rejuvenation during the work day. Each month will focus on a beneficial intention to guide us.  

No registration is required and no prior experience with meditation is necessary. All are welcome.

Virtually

  • First Wednesday of the month at 12:15 - 12:45 pm 
  • Third Thursday of the month at 2 pm - 2:20 pm

Monthly BIPOC Support Group

Every 2nd Tuesday of the Month, 12 - 12:50 pm

Facilitated by Kiran Johl, LCSW. Employee Assistance Counselor

First group meets on Tuesday, October 10th at noon

This virtual space is for Black, Indigenous, and staff and faculty of Color to join together in community for discussion, support, and encouragement. Topics such as challenges and successes of working at UC Berkeley, intersection of identities, current events, and fostering one’s mental and physical health will be explored.

Fall 2024 Stress Management Workshops

Tips and Tools for Getting Enough Sleep

Tuesday, September 17th, Noon - 1 pm via Zoom

Speaker: Allison Harvey, Professor of Psychology, Director, The Golden Bear Sleep and Mood Research Clinic

The past five decades have seen an avalanche of discoveries on the benefits of healthy sleep. Healthy sleep improves every aspect of our lives. In this presentation, we will explore the
possibility that improving sleep health is an overlooked pathway for supporting our lives. We will also identify a range of psychosocial and behavioral contributors to insufficient sleep and how they can be modified.

Emotional Intelligence for the Workplace

Thursday, October 31st, noon - 1 pm via Zoom

Speaker: Elliott DiTusa, LPCC, Employee Assistance 

Understanding and managing our emotions can increase our sense of well-being, motivation, empathy and ability to relate to others in a healthy way. This workshop will examine what it means to be emotionally intelligent and how to apply key concepts to create a more successful and fulfilling work/life experience.

Simple Practices for a Calmer Mind: Breathing and Grounding Techniques

Wednesday, November 6th, Noon - 1 pm via Zoom

Speaker: Julie Resnik, LCSW, Employee Assistance

Research shows that on the average day an adult has 6,000 thoughts - about six per waking minute. Many of us struggle with anxious thoughts, rumination, or feel easily distracted during the day. Grounding and breathing exercises bring focus on the present moment and awareness to our senses. In this workshop, participants will practice different techniques to calm their bodies and minds by taking part in guided breathwork, gentle stretching and mindfulness exercises.

Reclaiming Rest

Wednesday, December 11th, Noon - 1 pm via Zoom

Speaker: Kiran Johl, LCSW, Employee Assistance 

Rest is something that our bodies naturally know to do, and that is required to maintain our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Yet many of us can relate to the experience of being unable to fully rest; we may experience guilt or anxiety when we try to take a break. This workshop utilizes a systems framework to contextualize why resting is harder than it seems, and why it is vital to reclaim this process. Participants will learn about 7 different types of rest, and strategies for identifying what rest they need, and how to achieve more restfulness and resilience.

Elder Care Training and Education

The Elder Care program offers monthly educational workshops and webinars on topics related to elder care and caregiver resilience. The workshops are presented by professionals and experienced caregivers. These workshops are open to current UC Berkeley and LBL employees and generally take place on a weekday from 12:10-1:30 pm.
