Record a video or audio clip in the Vids recording studio (Workspace Labs)

Important: This article refers to Google Workspace Labs, which is an invite only program for users to try new AI Features. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs features, open Google Vids. A window to help you start creating in Vids will appear if you have access. Learn where you can use Workspace Labs features.

Record your own video clips to add to a scene using the Vids recording studio. You can use the recording studio to:

  • Add a video recording of yourself.
  • Add a screen recording with narration.
  • Add a screen recording with video recording.
  • Add audio-only recording.

Add a recording placeholder

Use video placeholders to plan where you’d like to add video clips from the recording studio or stock videos. 

  1. On your computer, open a video in Google Vids.
  2. From the timeline, click the scene where you want to add the recording and then Insert and then Video placeholder .
  3. Click on a video placeholder to add it to your scene.
  4. The video placeholder will be added to the scene for you to arrange and format.
    • Before you add your recording, you can add a sample video.
      1. Right-click on the placeholder.
      2. Click Sample video.
      3. Select a video to add to your placeholder.

Record a video or audio clip

Record your own video or audio clips to add to a scene using the Vids recording studio.

Important:

  • To use a teleprompter in the Vids recording studio, add a script before opening the studio. Learn more about scripts.
  • To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs, you must exit Workspace Labs. If you exit, you'll permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features, and you won’t be able to rejoin Workspace Labs.
  1. On your computer, open a video in Google Vids.
  2. From the timeline, click the scene where you want to add the recording.
  3. In the side panel, click Recording .
    • Tip: If your scene has a video placeholder where you want to add your recording, click Record video in the placeholder to open the recording studio.
  4. The recording studio will open. On the pop-ups that appear, allow your browser to access your device’s camera and microphone.
  5. Select from available recording options:
    • Camera  : To capture video and audio from your computer’s camera and microphone.
    • Camera and screen  : To capture video and audio from your computer’s camera and microphone and your computer screen.
    • Audio and screen : To record your screen with system audio.
    • Audio  : To capture audio only from your computer’s microphone.
  6. If you’re using a script, select your teleprompter mode, text size, and scroll speed:
    • Select your teleprompter mode:
      • Read along: As you read from the script, Vids will help follow your speech to highlight the current portion of your script and scroll to match your progress.
        • Tip: When you turn on read along mode, your web browser controls the speech-to-text service. It determines how your speech is processed and then sends the text to Google Slides.
      • Rolling: The script will scroll at a constant speed.
      • Manual: In manual mode, scroll down as needed to view your script or click into the teleprompter text and you can use your up/down buttons on the keyboard to scroll.
        • Tips:
          • Use the slider next to speed to adjust the speed your script appears in Manual mode.
          • Make sure you click Recording before you click into the teleprompter to control with keyboard.
    • To adjust text size, find Text size  below where the script appears, and use the slider to adjust text to your preferred size.
    • To edit your script, click Edit ​​ below the teleprompter, then update your script in the Script side panel.
  7. When you’re ready, select Start recording at the bottom of your screen.
  8. When you’re done, select Pause recording at the bottom of your screen.
  9. Click Preview and then Insert.
    • Tip: If you want to reuse a recording you’ve created in one video in a different video, you can copy and paste your recording into a new video.

Important: To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs you must exit Workspace Labs. If you exit, you will permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features, and you won’t be able to rejoin Workspace Labs. Learn more about how to exit Workspace Labs.
