Wow. That's comprehensive! I can't get to it because too preoccupied AFK at the moment. just thinking.. given a vertical spiral-primitive through the given theta in the given h, would a linear mix between the that spiral, duplicated, A: aligned to entry, B: aligned to exit (at its other end), by factor h, do all this maths for you? (You might not even need h)

Perhaps one of the first things we could look for is a strange key-binding. Header > Edit > Preferences > Keymap > Search by Key-Binding rmb . Anything funny in there? Or .. You can save your preferences manually (Hamburger bottom-right) Switch off AutoSave just in case .. 'Load Factory Preferences' . If no joy, you can use the same menu to 'Revert'.

This is certainly a model for reconstruction, not manual retopology.. it's just a surface of revolution (Screw modifier) , on profile geometry .. possibly borrowed and cleaned up from your hi-res version, or just traced, plus some clean-up at the poles on the axis of rotation.
