"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."

Stack Overflow appears to be a vast experiment to prove the truth of this statement.

comment Was Macbeth considering murdering Duncan before Lady Macbeth encouraged him to?
This is an excellent summary - better than my answer - but I don't think your points 7 & 8 hold much water.. 7 could well be a figure of speech, like someone saying "he plans to go tomorrow" and doesn't carry any implications. 8 always felt to me like a warning on what happens when someone violates a taboo: once broken, it becomes easier to do so again, and again.

@PeterShor I did wonder that, but the "crying for the blindness, even of fictional beings" suggested to me that it wasn't metaphorical. Hardly definitive though.

comment Was "The Tombs of Atuan" inspired by a real archaeology site?
@verbose possibly, but it seems very unlikely that it's the correct answer. It seems to have only the most tangential connection to what the OP is looking for: it's a different story, and it concerns a vanished civilization rather than a specific dig site.

It doesn't pertain to a particular site, unfortunately: “The last story I wrote… came from idly looking at the map and wondering what life was like on O back in the old days. It turns out to have some curious resemblances to life on Mycenae.”
