According to the article A landmark Finnish study is changing how we approach transgender kids:

A major new study out of Finland found that providing cross-sex hormones and gender-transition surgeries to adolescents and young adults didn’t appear to have any significant effect on suicide deaths.

They are referring to the study All-cause and suicide mortalities among adolescents and young adults who contacted specialised gender identity services in Finland in 1996–2019.

Is it true that gender transitioning has no effect on suicidal ideation?

The quote is talking about suicide deaths, but the question asks about suicide ideation. Those are very different things. You should either adjust the question to match the quote, or find a quote that makes a claim about ideation.

@IMSoP The paper says "[medical gender reassignment] has also not been shown to reduce even suicidal ideation, and suicidal ideation is not equal to actual suicide risk". However, I'm not sure if OP is interested in answers about suicide ideation or deaths.

  • @blue289: Note that the answer to your question may not be what you actually want to know. In particular, consider that in a society where girls are regularly abused but boys are given privileges, being able to jump from one group to another can lead to a decrease in suicide ideation, but for the wrong reason. To get the answer you want, you would have to create or find an environment that is genuinely fair for all (see 1, 2) and then measure the statistical difference in suicide ideation before gender interventions if any at all.

I found an answer:

Among other things:

In addition, the argument about a large sample size makes no sense at all. While there were a reasonably large number of people in this study, with 2k clinic patients and 16k controls, what we actually care about for the type of statistical test the authors were running is the number of events (suicides). In this case, we’re looking at just 7 suicides in the clinic patient cohort, split up between people who were and weren’t treated. In such situations, as I noted above, Cox proportional hazards models are notorious for misfiring and producing spurious results.

  • I think the correct answer is in what you are quoting, but as this stands it is missing a conclusion. Some bits from your article that may make it more clear include "Basically, the fact that the model didn’t find anything is largely uninterpretable.", "In reality, the appropriate conclusion from this study is that hormones and surgery are associated with a roughly 70% reduction in risk of suicide for gender dysphoric youth, but that this result is very uncertain. It’s plausible, based on the data here, that the true reduction is anywhere from <1% to >90%."
