On Friday 12 July, the MV Lindsaylou bulk cargo vessel, loaded with 40,500 tonnes of sulphur docked at the mineral terminal of the Port of Lobito, marking the beginning of port operations for the Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR). The sulphur, will initially be stored at the mineral terminal and then be placed on LAR international cargo trains bound for the Democratic Republic of Congo to support refined copper production by mining companies based in the Katanga area. Francisco Franca, President of the Board of Directors of LAR, commented on the arrival of the first ship and the start of port operations: “This marks the final step in bringing together all of the logistics required to operationalize and develop LAR to its full potential.” He added: “LAR reaffirms its commitment to the most important logistics corridor in the region and to increasing the volumes of railway and port operations to achieve the strategic objectives of the Government of Angola in this important corridor of regional economic development.” Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eDi_PBuh #Trafigura #SupplyChains #SecuringSupplyChains #ConnectingVitalResources #Logistics #SupplyChainManagement #LobitoAtlanticCorridor #LobitoAtlanticRailway

We are pleased to have signed a MOU with international engineering company Promarks Energy Solutions SA and the Government of Angola to conduct a technical and economic viability study to develop a Public Private Partnership model for a major inter-regional power transmission and supply project. The project under consideration is to build and operate a 2,000 MW high-voltage electricity interconnector to take surplus green electricity produced by hydro-electric dams located in the north of Angola to the DRC Copperbelt and Zambia, integrating with the Southern Africa Power Pool. The renewable electricity would be purchased from Angola's National Electricity Transmission Network, with the energy sold to customers such as global mining companies in the Copperbelt and throughout countries in the SADC. The joint venture that will be formed between ProMarks and Trafigura would develop, finance, construct and operate the electricity interconnector. The three parties now intend to complete viability studies as set out in the MOU to define the steps for developing the project. We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Mountain Creek power plant in Texas alongside our joint-venture partner Frontier Group of Companies. The 808MW steam turbine gas-fired plant, located close to Dallas and operating within the Texan ERCOT power system, provides a flexible source of electricity during periods of high demand. The acquisition not only presents an opportunity to strengthen our gas and power business in the US but the 1,500 acre site, with existing grid infrastructure, also offers potential future development opportunities that can contribute to regional energy security, low carbon power solutions, or additional flexible power production. “Hydrogen should replace some uses of diesel in the near term” - Margaux Moore, Trafigura’s Head of Energy Transition Group and Venture Capital Investments, speaking at the Global Energy Transition Congress in Milan this week. Margaux said the debate around low-emission hydrogen should concentrate on its potential to replace fossil fuels today – as well as its future possibilities. She pointed out that most discussions today focus on replacing natural gas, which is still a much more economic energy source than hydrogen. "My perspective is that hydrogen should target diesel usage today where pure electrification is not possible. Diesel is heavily taxed, has a similar energy density to hydrogen, and requires a smaller subsidy to replace compared to natural gas," she said. "Let’s prioritise the low-hanging fruit that need smaller subsidies today, so that we can bring down the cost of hydrogen to target other applications tomorrow." #GETcongress2024 #Decarbonisation #ConnectingVitalResources #Trafigura #Hydrogen #EnergyTransition #GETcongress

Watch us take the next step in making low-carbon ammonia a future marine fuel to decarbonise shipping. Last week Trafigura, shipowner Purus and ship-to-ship operation specialist International Fender Providers successfully completed the first ammonia ship-to-ship transfer in international waters, demonstrating the feasibility of ammonia bunkering in the future. "We are proud to partner with Trafigura on this historic STS with the Green Power vessel, a modern MGC for ammonia transport. This STS transfer demonstrates our capability to offer customers end-to-end floating pipeline solutions for energy transition cargoes that can offer greater flexibility and speed-to-market than conventional onshore storage tanks, accelerating the clean energy transition," said a Purus spokesperson. Last week we successfully completed our first ammonia ship-to-ship transfer in international waters close to the Port of Ceuta in the Strait of Gibraltar further affirming our commitment to decarbonise shipping. The 6,000 metric tonnes delivery was supplied by leading low-carbon ammonia producer CF Industries’ from their Louisiana-based manufacturing complex and transferred between the Purus-owned and operated and Trafigura-chartered Green Power medium gas carrier and Gas Aegean the small gas carrier. The STS operation was conducted by International Fender Providers (IFP) in line with current regulations and the shipment is now on its way to leading Spanish fertiliser producer Grupo Fertiberia. Andrea Olivi our Head of Wet Freight commented on this milestone for the Group: “Our first safe and efficient ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia supports our growing ammonia trading activity. Importantly, it demonstrates the feasibility of ammonia bunkering in the future as demand grows for the hydrogen-based low carbon fuels that will enable the shipping industry to decarbonise.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ehkYNtyD #Ammonia #AlternativeFuels #ConnectingVitalResources #Trafigura #MarineFuelsModernised #STS #ShipToShip
