A word square is a square grid of letters in which every row and column forms a word. They can be clued just like normal crossword puzzles. Use with [crosswords] or [cryptic-crosswords] if the word square is clued as such.

A word square is a square grid of letters in which every row and column forms a word. A regular square is a word square in which the horizontal and vertical words are the same. A double square is a word square in which the horizontal and vertical words are different.

This is an example of a regular word square:

The size of one side of the square is known as the order of the square. The example above has order 5.

Generalizations of word squares to other shapes are called forms. Common forms include diamonds, rectangles, and hollow squares.

Word squares (and other forms) can be clued just like normal crossword puzzles.
