In fact, it's worth pointing out here that the crossword entries have clearly been specifically chosen so that there are 'I's positioned throughout the grid in such a way that there is only one possible route through the maze, without doubling-back on oneself at any point. This can be seen effectively by adding additional walls (here marked with crosses) around any cell containing an 'I':
