A transition by which the energy of at least one photon is completely transferred to a material.
Atoms and molecules can absorb electromagnetic radiation in many different ways. The transitions between rotational, vibrational, electronic and nuclear states are some of the possibilities. In a magnetic field, nuclear and electron spin states may also be quantized, so transitions between these states are possible.
