About

Statistician, Data Scientist, Economist

I am a Statistician and Data Scientist with broad interests in mathematics, statistics, economics, and philosophy. I have worked within academia and in consulting roles in industry and government. My main research interests are in statistical computation, experimental design, sampling theory, applied statistical modelling, Bayesian theory and methodology, and discrimination problems. I do a lot of applied statistical modelling and development of algorithms for statistical analysis and machine learning. I am interested in using data and statistical insights to improve decision-processes and help to contribute to a more rational and prosperous world. I love all kinds of data analysis and statistical theory.

I have published academic research in various areas in statistics and philosophy and I have also written a number of essays on subjects of interest to me. I have given presentations at national and international academic conferences. In my academic work I have taught a broad swathe of mathematical and statistical subjects to undergraduates and postgraduates, and I have also given a number of presentations on moral and political philosophy to student groups and conferences. I am a regular contributor to the statistics Q&A website CrossValidated, where I answer questions about mathematics and statistics. In my consulting roles I have deveoped and uplifted data practices at several major organisations as well as providing training and capability improvement for data teams.

Most of my statistical analysis work is done using R. I enjoy data analysis and programming in this language. I am the author of four R packages; the stat.extend package (functions for computing HDRs and confidence intervals); the ts.extend package (various functions for ARMA time-series models and testing for periodic signals in time-series), the occupancy package (probability functions for various occupancy distributions), and the utilties package (a range of functions for preliminary analysis of data).
