Is the last man an authentically envious person (or state of mind), devising ways to steal what others will have, their happiness, and what they would be jealous of if it came to pass? I think it makes sense, but has anyone interpreted it so cleanly?

  • there is a clear difference between envy and being in conflict for a good, which could be one way of stating the question

"The last man" makes everything small because he has no sense of nobility; a society of "last men" will aim at equalizing the condition of all and of giving envy a rational form. Once envy has been rationalized and institutionalized the one who thinks or wills differently will no longer be subjected to scapegoating or ostracism", Shapiro, Nietzsche on Envy.
