Over ons

Tony’s Chocolonely is an impact company that makes chocolate, committed to ending exploitation in cocoa. And not just the cocoa in our chocolate, but in all chocolate worldwide. Tony's Chocolonely was founded in 2005 by 3 journalists from the Dutch TV show ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde’ after they discovered that the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers were buying cocoa from plantations that used illegal labor. Since then, we've dedicated our efforts to raising awareness of and eliminating inequality in the cocoa industry, becoming the #1 chocolate brand in the Netherlands. With incredibly tasty chocolate, we lead by example and show the world that chocolate can be made differently: in taste, packaging and the way we do business with cocoa farmers. Starting with paying them a higher price. Alone, we’ll end exploitation in our cocoa supply chain, but together we can change the industry across the globe. That's why we invite everyone to join our commitment. 'Cause it's only together that we'll end exploitation in cocoa.

Together. It’s the word that’s at the core of everything we do here at Tony’s. Why? ’Cause we’re setting out to inspire global change across the cocoa industry. And that’s a team effort. 🤝 Today, we’d like to celebrate the collaboration at the (very) start of the cocoa chain, with the farmer cooperatives we partner with. 🤝 These co-ops are people-centered organizations with democratic management, and all the farmers that Tony’s Open Chain works with are members. Here’s why that’s great: Partner cooperatives offer benefits, like.. 💵 better payment terms for farmers. 🌳 benefits of economies of scale when buying resources, like seeds and shade trees. 🔁 communally shared info + centralized services, like labor brigades and training. 📣 representation of their combined interest and having one stronger voice in the market. Right now, Tony’s Open Chain works with 11 different co-ops in Ghana + Côte d’Ivoire. By the end of next year, that’ll be a whoppin’ 19. We have close and direct relationships with all of them and always work with them together for the long-term to create long-term change. Happy International Co-op Day to every cooperative in cocoa. Together, we’ll raise the bar for every farmer in the industry until we end all forms of exploitation. #internationalcooperativesday #cooperatives #collaboration #partnership #tonysopenchain #cocoa #chocolate #together

You know that colleague who talks about something like you know what they mean but you’ve actually got no clue? We think we might be that colleague.. so let’s rewind. ⏪ Tony's 5 Sourcing Principles – our tried-and-true rules to end exploitation in cocoa. We mention them a lot, but what do they mean? Let’s dive into the 1st one.. ☝️ Using 100% traceable cocoa beans. Not 98%. Not 99%. We’re talking ’bout tracing every single bean that’s in your bar. Heck yeah! ’Cause knowing exactly who, where, when + how cocoa is grown is key to taking responsibility. So we can make sure every farmer is paid a living income price and our cocoa remains deforestation free. 🌳 Yeppp, our way of working works! That’s why we invite every chocolate company to source cocoa like us, via Tony’s Open Chain – aka our collaborative initiative for change. We’ll be back soon to unwrap our 2nd principle! Can’t wait? Every other child in cocoa-growing households is engaged in child labor in Ghana + Côte d’Ivoire. That’s 1.56 million children, with 95% doing dangerous work. The root cause? Poverty. A direct result of the unequally divided cocoa chain, which forces farmers to turn to children for help on the farm (and we’re not talking about household chores). Tony’s exists to end exploitation in cocoa, tackling forced labor, child labor and deforestation. To drive down child labor, we (and all companies sourcing via Tony’s Open Chain) have implemented the Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS), together with our partner co-ops. This system allows us to identify, address + prevent child labor in our supply chain. And the proof is in the pudding: 📉 While the % of child labor cases at Tony’s Open Chain long-term partner co-ops (3+ years) is 4.4%, the industry average rings in at a shocking 46.7%. We know there’s more work to be done, so we’ll keep raising the bar to raise awareness. Until we end child labor in cocoa, together. #WorldDayAgainstChildLabor #childlabor #cocoa #tonyschocolonely #tonysopenchain

Yesterday was a wildly impactful Wednesday! 🥳 We successfully wrapped up the 2nd annual Tony’s Open Chain Day: a day where we reflect on our momentum and share our progress on ending exploitation in cocoa. 🌍🍫🤝 We gathered with fellow ethical cocoa frontrunners, including our Mission Allies, like Ben & Jerry's and Aldi, as well as some of our partner co-ops from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, key government representatives and civil society organizations, including IDH. 🎉 Here are some of the milestones we celebrated, together: ✅ By working with Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles, we’re enabling farmers to earn a living income, driving down child labor and protecting the planet by preventing deforestation. ✅ With welcoming Waitrose & Partners as the 1st UK retailer to join our commitment to end exploitation in cocoa, we’re now proudly at 18 Mission Allies (& counting). ✅ We reaffirmed our target of sourcing 18,900 metric tons (MT) of cocoa in 2024 and are planning to scale that number up to a staggering 30,000 MT of cocoa in 2025! ✅ We onboarded a whopping 8 (!!) new partner co-ops in West Africa, bringing our total to 19 partner co-ops (meaning we not almost doubled the number of co-ops we source beans from, but we’ll work with up to 21,7K cocoa farmers this year). In a cocoa shell: ch-ch-changes are happening, and the ethical cocoa movement is growing steadily. 💪 Together, we’re setting a new norm in cocoa! Wanna dive deeper into Tony’s Open Chain’s impact over the last year? Read our latest impact report (spoiler alert: it’s choc-full of progress!) 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXFiNMzB 👏 Let’s give it up for our host, Amelia Hoy and everyone who joined us yesterday! #cocoa #impact #tonysopenchain #tonyschocolonely #chocolate

A great day for human rights. 💪 We’re back with another update on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD) and the Forced Labor Regulation (#FLR). In March, the #EUCouncil officially passed both laws. And today, the #EUParliament did the very same. Although they’ve been severely watered down, we’re still (very) happy that big corporations – including Big Choco! – will finally be held accountable for human rights + environmental violations, thanks in large part to our Serious Friend Lara Wolters. 🤝 Tony’s has been advocating for corporate sustainability legislation since day 1 📣, gathering 66k signatures to offer to Commissioner Didier Reynders, makin’ noise in Brussels and voicing our support as a member of the Cocoa Coalition. The Harkin-Engel Protocol showed us that voluntary agreements don’t pave the way for structural change – we need strong legislation. And here we are; the EU has finally raised the floor on human rights. ❤️ And turning a blind eye is no longer possible. A definite win, but there’s more ground to cover as we work to end exploitation in cocoa together. And so we’ll keep raising the bar to lead the way with Tony’s Open Chain, showing all players how to source cocoa sustainably + responsibly.  Wanna learn more ’bout the events that led up to today? A reality check this Earth Day: You know why cocoa prices are soaring? ’Cause production is dramatically low. Mainly due to climate change. Let’s unwrap the searing truth.. 🌍🔥 In our global, collective fight against a changing climate, it’s cocoa farmers who are on the losing end. Again. Cocoa volume in West Africa is down by 30% on average compared to last year. Making it impossible for farmers to earn a living income, even with higher prices. At Tony’s, we source all our cocoa according to our 5 Sourcing Principles, to end all forms of exploitation in cocoa. ’Cause there’s no 1 way to fix all issues – we need all 5 principles to make a real, lasting change. 💪 All our cocoa is 100% deforestation-free, which means the CO2 emissions from our cocoa are about 87-95% lower than other cocoa from the same region. As it’s not yet possible to eliminate all our emissions, we compensate for 100% of our total carbon footprint. We also invest in biodiversity on cocoa plantations, helping farmers make their farms more climate resilient. ’Cause they shouldn’t carry this global burden alone. 🤝 We can't achieve social justice on a broken planet, so let’s protect it, together. Wanna learn more about our efforts? 🍫💚 Read the latest Tony’s Open Chain report: Tony's Open Chain impact report 2022/23: https://lnkd.in/eXFiNMzB #EarthDay #EarthDay2024 #ClimateChange #UnitedNations

What in the world.. We’re launching at the largest retailer worldwide! Howdy Walmart! 🥳🍫 By expanding in the US, we’re taking big steps towards our goal of ending exploitation in cocoa. ’Cause more chocolate sold means more beans sourced according to our 5 Sourcing Principles, positively impacting cocoa farmers in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Psst.. Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles include paying a higher price long-term + investing in productivity, enabling farmers to earn a living income and move out of poverty. 🙌 Look out for our bright wrappers on shelf! 👀
