🌎 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘇𝗼𝗼-𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝘇𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗸𝗶 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗞𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗸𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀! Tierpark Berlin (Germany) just sent us an update about the 4 Przewalski horses that flew over 4,000 km from Berlin to Kazakhstan a month ago. They were brought there within the "Return Of The Wild Horses" project to form the first herd in the region together with 3 horses from Zoo Praha (Czechia). 🐴 All horses have settled in well in the Altyn Dala steppe and take great interest in their new habitat: exploring the acclimatisation area and foraging on local plants. The ACBK — Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan team in Alibi is monitoring them daily – behaviours, faecal samples, etc. - which is essential to ensure their optimal health and continued welfare. 🔎 They are also studying natural vegetation recovery and growth dynamics within the designated areas for the future release, planned to take place after the winter. 🌱 In line with the 2021 to 2030 United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the project’s goal is to release 40 horses into the Kazakh steppe over the next 5 years to help establish a founder population in the country with positive effects also for insects, small mammals, and ground-nesting birds. 🐴 The released horses (will) come from the EAZA Ex situ Programme. Who knows, the two foals born in Tierpark Berlin in May might join the herd in Alibi one day? Did you know the giant magnolia snail was rediscovered in 2012, after over 100 years without records? 🐌 Due to their large, colorful and shiny shells, these snails are highly attractive for wildlilfe market and are also threatened by forest destruction and disturbance. Colonies multiply slowly due to the species’ unusual biology of provisioning their young with infertile ‘nurse eggs’. 🥚 Breeding in zoos and aquariums is therefore crucial to preserve this Critically Endangered species that’s more sensitive to irregular substrate, food changes and pest invasions than other land snails. The BPG contain comprehensive and up-to-date information to best care for these molluscs, that require for instance very large quantities of fresh leaf litter🍃, consistently high humidity / temperature 🌡️ and a high protein diet 💪 to fuel its rapid growth. 🌎 Conservation Optimism | 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘇𝗼𝗼-𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱! Earlier this year, a bearded vulture chick hatched in Sierra de Castril Natural Park (Spain) for the first time in 50 years! 🐣 🦅 Its mother was born in ZOO Liberec (Czechia) as part of the EAZA Ex situ Programme (EEP) for the species. She was released into the wild in 2017. 𝘎𝘺𝘱𝘢𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 are Endangered in the Mediterranean region so this is amazing news for the species! 💪This success was made possible thanks to the long-lasting collaborative efforts of the EEP participating zoos and their partners!
