Background information[]

  • Contrary to the previous and subsequent season releases, no allowances were made this time with the commercial sensibilities of Prime Video, the series' first-time streamer outside North America, nor has the Star Trek franchise provided any reason for the release divergence – though it is highly conceivable, especially in the context of the increasingly vicious streaming wars, that it actually concerned subliminal messaging by the conglomerate to Amazon, that it was to be cut out from the franchise mix in the foreseeable future.
  • Even though Region 4 saw its own DVD version released, a separate Blu-ray counterpart was not, and Blu-ray consumers had to make do with UK (region-free) imports.
  • In contrast, several mainland European territories had seen a separate Region B Blu-ray release, but not a Region 2 DVD counterpart, unlike the previous series release which had seen home video releases in both formats. This change in DVD release policy was not a reflection on the popularity of the series – which had turned out to be quite the fan-favorite – , but had rather the rapidly dwindling market for physical home video formats, the DVD in particular, as the most likely reason, and that forgoing henceforth on a separate DVD release for those territories entailed substantial production cost savings. DVD customers in these territories had to make do with UK Region 2 imports.
  • Something similar applied to Japan, which for its DVD counterpart had to make do with US Region 1 imports – which they henceforth also had to do with the Blu-ray counterparts for which any region-free import would do.
