A field trip was the term used to describe an educational excursion of school students and their teachers to an environment away from the classroom.

During the first half of the 22nd century, Charles Tucker III recalled a grade school teacher who was once certain that he had stolen a pencil off her desk, and wouldn't let him go on a field trip to Pensacola unless he apologized. (ENT: "A Night in Sickbay")

In 2364, Wesley Crusher and eleven other students went on a field trip to Quazulu VIII, where they were exposed to a virus. (TNG: "Angel One")

In 2368, teacher Miss Kyle organized a "father and son" field trip for the primary school on board the USS Enterprise-D, during which her students visited the ship's biolab to learn about other lifeforms. Among those attending was Security Chief Lieutenant Worf and his son, Alexander. (TNG: "New Ground")

The following year, within just a few weeks of opening her classroom on Deep Space 9, Keiko O'Brien took all eleven of her students on a field trip to Bajor, to visit the grain processing center in Lasuma. (DS9: "Dramatis Personae")

In 2370, after the USS Rio Grande rescued Jake Sisko and Nog, Quark told his nephew he was never going on a field trip again. (DS9: "The Jem'Hadar")

In 2373, when Tova Veer suggested a small expedition to uncover their distant genetic relatives could be mounted, Forra Gegen protested that he wasn't talking about going on a field trip. He felt a sector wide expedition was required. (VOY: "Distant Origin")

In 2377, some students and their teacher took a field trip to the Communications Research Center. Commander Pete Harkins was giving them a tour of the Pathfinder Project research lab when Reginald Barclay interrupted him. (VOY: "Inside Man")
