Deep Space 253 was a Federation space station located in a remote region of space.
Following the Burn in the late 31st century, DS253 was functionally cut off from the remnants of the Federation and had not received a visit from Federation Headquarters since 3102. However, it had been trading with an Emerald Chain mercantile exchange since the 3090s.
In 3189, Minister Osyraa proposed to Fleet Admiral Charles Vance that the Federation sanction the Emerald Chain's trade with DS253 and allow them to establish an embassy on the station, thus signalling that they regarded the Chain's culture to be fundamentally valid and ethical.
