For any event $A$ with positive probability, $E[X\mid A]$ is by definition $E[XI_{A}]/P(A)$ where $I_A$ is an indicator function. For this problem you have $E[XI_{X\in\{1,2\}}]=\sum_{j\in\{1,2\}}jP(X=j)$, which is what you gave as your answer. You have to divide this by $P(X\in\{1,2\})$ to reach the correct answer. | |
