For example, if 5 players compete and the only thing that matters is winning first place, you would certainly want to reroll even an 8.

Sep 14, 2012 at 17:13 comment added Michael R. Chernick Since you know the result from the roll of the 8 sided die wouldn't a 7 or an 8 beat the expected payoff of 6.5 for the 12 sided die. I would say roll the 12 sided die if you get below 7 with the 8 sided and stop if you get a 7 or 8. This assumes expected gain as the the criterion to maximize.
