About

I received my Ph.D in mathematics from Ohio State in 1994 under the direction of Gerald Edgar and have been a professor of mathematics at The University of North Carolina - Asheville since 1997. By training, my scholarly interests include fractal geometry, discrete dynamics, and computer graphics to illustrate those topics.

My interests have expanded significantly in the years since earning my Ph.D., though. I consulted several years for Wolfram Research on the early development of WolframAlpha, for example. After leaving Wolfram Research, I turned to D3 as a tool to build mathematical visualizations for my students and later to Observable. That led to my increased interest in Data Visualization and, more generally, Data Science. I'm now developing a new Machine Learning curriculum at UNCA.
