Crime and Punishment is a novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, first published in installments in 1866. It follows the tangled moral and mental path of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished student who murders a moneylender with an axe after convincing himself that this was a morally justifiable act. It has been translated from Russian into many other languages, and remains one of the most-read works of Russian literature.
