The Constitution is the life of the Government of the United States" (De Lima v. Bidwell, 182 U.S. 1, 31 (1901)) as the United States is entirely a creature of the Constitution which is the source of all of its power and authority. Reid v. Covert, 354 U.S. 1, 5-6 (1956)

Therefore, the "Constitution […] of the United States [is] the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State [are] bound thereby, any thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding". (Cl. 2., Art. VI, U.S. Const.)
