King urges developed countries to support development

His Majesty King Abdullah II said the 21st century can provide a better life for billions of people, stressing that success depends on moving from dialogue towards deeds.



In his speech at the annual dinner banquette for the Clinton Global Initiative, King Abdullah said that development, international understanding and conflict resolution should be international priorities.



"Sustainable development is a virtuous cycle. It both creates, and benefits from, economic stability and growth," the King told the gathering which brought together hundreds of international prominent individuals.


He said this demands countries to make hard choices and called on developed countries to commit to discharging debts and increasing support for developing countries.



The Clinton Global Initiative was launched during the 60th session of the UN General Assembly. It is a forum for discussion and debate on a number of the world's most pressing global challenges: poverty, religion, conflict and reconciliation, climate change, governance, enterprise and investment.



In his speech, King Abdullah outlined the contents of Amman Message which highlights the tolerance, balance and moderation of Islam. He said that moderation and understanding is the responsibility of all religions and cultures.



He that solving the Palestinian issue in a just and comprehensive way according to the parameters of the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative is imperative for global peace and stability. The King called for immediate international action to support the resumption of peace negotiations.



Former US President Bill Clinton welcomed the King and Queen Rania, saying "When I met His Majesty King Abdullah and Queen Rania I felt great hope because they represented what I hoped [for] the new Middle East."



UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said that every kind of war, environmental deterioration, organized crime, terrorism and weapons of mass destruction constituted global challenges that threaten stability and life on earth.
